Hermann Upmann wrote to a Mr. Schloffer from Camp Crockett near San Antonio, TX to describe camp life, his trip from Wisconsin to Texas (including a stop in New Orleans), marching to battle and the Mexican countryside.  Also included is a description of his participation in the Battle of  Buena Vista, the wounds he received and the death of his friend Alexander Conze.  This latter part of the letter was probably an addition to the original or an error in the transcription since the letter is dated September 10, 1846, six months before that battle took place.
