Early in the war, Alexander Conze of Milwaukee enlisted in the Illinois Volunteers, later to become part of the Fifteenth United States Infantry.  He wrote a letter to the Wisconsin Banner Newspaper to describe the enlistment camp in Alton, IL, the other recruits with him and the overall mood of the camp.
