Wisconsin War LetterS

In honor of the thousands of Wisconsin veterans who have served this nation in time of war during the last 150 years, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries are proud to announce the 2002 annual Wisconsin Archives Week events theme, Wartime in Wisconsin. The feature of this year’s event will be renowned author, speaker and historian Andrew Carroll, author of War Letters: Extraordinary Correspondence from American Wars. This presentation will be held Thursday, October 24, 2002 from 7:00–9:00 PM in the UW-Milwaukee Libraries-Golda Meir Library, Fourth Floor Conference Center and will feature Mr. Carroll speaking on his popular book, which has reintroduced the past 150 year history of wartime America to a new generation of Americans. First published in May 2001, War Letters is a collection of previously unpublished letters of American soldiers and their families that focus on the personal experiences, interpretations and emotions of war on several fronts. They are organized by war, from the Civil War to Bosnia, and represent all branches of the service and all ranks of personnel, from enlisted men and women, to the leaders of the military and heads of state.

In tandem with Andrew Carroll’s work War Letters and in support of his visit to the UW-Milwaukee, the UW-Milwaukee-Division of Archives & Special Collections is creating a digital archives Web site Wisconsin War Letters, which will parallel Mr. Carroll’s book, with a specific focus on war participants from Wisconsin. Wisconsin War Letters will feature the letters of Wisconsin soldiers and their families, and will focus on their experiences during war from the 1840s to the 1990s. Wisconsin War Letters will use electronic facsimiles and transcriptions of the letters in the Web site, which will be accessible to the public on October 24, 2002 via the UW-Milwaukee-Division of Archives & Special Collections main Web site at http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/Library/arch/teaching.htm
