MUSIC LIBRARY

The Music Library particularly supports the UWM Department of Music as well as the teaching, research, and avocational needs of the entire UWM community, including interdisciplinary departments (e.g., anthropology, comparative literature) and the Center for 21st Century Studies, as well as the Milwaukee community at large, including the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, which is affiliated with the UWM Department of Music.

Academic Program Support

Undergraduate: Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are offered in Music with concentrations in Performance, Education, Music History & Literature, and Composition & Technology.

Graduate: Masters degrees are offered in Vocal and Instrumental Performance, Chamber Music Performance, Conducting, Music History & Literature, Music Education, Theory & Composition, and Accompanying. Of particular note:

The MM/MLIS is a double degree requiring concurrent progress in the programs for the MM in Music History & Literature and the Master of Library and Information Science.

The Institute of Chamber Music trains instrumental performers at a professional level in the performance of chamber music.

Literature in music education includes: history and philosophy; methodology, psychology, and testing; administration; juvenile literature; and music therapy.

Advanced study.

Collection Profile

Heavily collected are works on musicology and music history from ancient to contemporary styles and periods, notably Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern; works about musicians including composers, conductors, and singers; ensembles including chamber music groups, orchestras, and choirs; works about musical instruments and their playing; conducting, and musical accompaniment; singing techniques; composition; music theory including harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration; musical forms and styles; musical drama; music education; and music therapy. Ethnomusicology is selectively acquired.
Special Collections: The Music Library holds several unique collections. These include:

  • Sheet Music Collection
A small but growing collection of sheet music, mostly popular songs from the 1890s to the 1940s. Donations appropriate to this collection are welcome. Included in the Sheet Music Collection is the FDR Sheet Music Collection, a small collection of songs written about Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
  • Slovenian Music Collection
An extensive and growing collection of the music of contemporary Slovenian composers acquired through the Frank and Mary Ermenc Fund, including scores, parts, and recordings. Most items are searchable in the Libraries' Online Catalog; however, this collection also includes many choral arrangements of Slovenian folk music in multiple copies which are not listed in the online catalog.

Formats Collected

  • Print
Monographs, librettos, indexing and abstracting products, and other standard reference sources and secondary literature of music are purchased in print form, unless lack of availability, cost, or storage problems indicate purchase in some other format. Primary coverage is literature about Western Art Music, with increasing coverage of popular and non-western traditions.
  • Scores
Printed scores are collected in support of both the performance and study of music. This includes: performing editions of instrumental chamber music (up to 13 players), each on a separate part; full scores of orchestral literature; vocal music for solo voice, voice and piano, or voice and chamber ensemble; opera scores, collected primarily as piano-vocal score, though sometimes in full-score format; and piano-vocal scores of musical theater. Selected anthologies of popular and jazz music are collected to provide a level of representation. In addition, music of Slovenia is collected.
  • Recordings
Recordings are purchased in Compact Disc format only, except to provide representation of styles of music that may be available only in cassette tape or vinyl formats. Coverage includes primarily Western Art Music. Music of the non-Western traditions is collected in support of Music Department courses and interdisciplinary study. Popular music and jazz are collected on a limited basis to provide representation of trends, and to encourage interdisciplinary use of the collection. Enhanced CD's, which include multi-media elements for which a computer is required, may be purchased to provide a broader access to the literature of music.
  • Electronic Resources
The UWM Libraries purchase a large selection of interdisciplinary indexes and full-text databases which include coverage of music. In addition to these resources, the Music Librarian will, through the use of a WWW page, provide access to other music-specific indexes and databases, electronic journals, and other resources. Purchase of stand-alone CD-ROM products specific to music is approached in the same manner as purchase of any other format.

Gifts

The Music Library accepts gifts of books, scores, sheet music, and compact discs for potential inclusion in its holdings, as appropriate. Unsuitable materials may be donated to the Friends of the Library for their book sales. For the most part, the Music Library no longer adds phonograph records. In rare instances cassette tapes may be accepted if they provide representation of a previously uncollected musical style, composer, or artist.

Languages

Collection of print material is primarily in English. Materials in standard European languages will be collected when appropriate. Scores and recordings are collected regardless of origin or language when appropriate for the collection.

Related Subject Collections
