Accessing Articles from a Database
Research for Arguments Tutorial

After finding a set of articles that will support your argument, you will want to locate the article electronically or in print.

The citation is the key to locating the article. Depending on the database, some articles are available electronically by clicking on an icon. Look at the following citations from two different databases.

Labeled citation from the database "Social Sciences Full Text."

Labeled citation from the database "Academic Search."

Note that both articles are available electronically in HTML and PDF. *
*Both of these citations indicate that the article can be accessed electronically directly from the database by clicking on the HTML or PDF icon. When given both options, PDF is usually the best version to choose. The PDF version of the article is a scanned image of the original including graphs, charts, photographs, and the original page numbers. HTML versions are reformatted. Page numbers will be different from the original, and therefore, difficult to cite. Graphs, charts, and photographs may be missing from the HTML.
