To access Web of Science, click on the link under “W” from the Find Articles: Databases A-Z link on the UWM Libraries home page; and then click on Web of Knowledge. From the introductory page of ISI, click on Web of Science under the heading "Searchable Database Products."

Select a search option. Choose from Quick Search, General Search, Cited Reference Search, or Advanced Search.
The bottom half of the screen allows a choice of database and timespan coverage. The default setting is all databases and all years.
SEARCHING
Quick Search

- Enter topic terms in the Quick Search text box. The use of Boolean search operators (AND, OR, NOT, SAME) and wildcards/truncation (*) is acceptable.
- Click the Go button.
General Search

Search for records within specific fields, such as by topic or author name. Every search is added to the Search History table.
How to Do a General Search
- Enter search terms in at least one field:
- Topic (can be limited to terms in the title only)
- Author (enter the last name and first or first/second initials of authors)
- Group Author (organizations, agencies, etc.)
- Source Title
- Publication Year or Range of Years
- Address (author affiliation)
- To limit the search, scroll down the page and select one or more languages and/or document types.
- Up to 250 characters can be typed in each field box, including search terms and operators.
- Click Search.
Cited Reference Search

Search for articles that cite other works. Cited reference searching enables the user to find articles that have cited a previously published work. Through a cited reference search, discover how a known idea or innovation has been confirmed, applied, improved, extended, or corrected.
In Arts & Humanities Citation Index, cited reference searching also returns results that make reference to and/or include an illustration of a work of art or a music score.
How To Do a Cited Reference Search
- Enter the name of a Cited Author and/or the abbreviated title of a Cited Work. Click Search.
- If too many hits are retrieved, return to the search form and add a Cited Year or a range of cited years.
- Click
to select a different database from the default of all databases.
- Click on Search; the references in the results will the cited author/cited work data entered.
- Select reference(s) from the citation index, and then click Finish Search. The result will be the records of articles that cite the reference selected from the citation index (not the articles/authors being cited).
Tips:
- Enter the name of the first author of a multi-authored article or book.
- Enter an abbreviated journal title or the first one or two significant words of a book title followed by an asterisk. Look up abbreviations for cited works in the cited work index or in the ISI list of journal abbreviations.
- Do the cited reference lookup without entering a cited year in order to retrieve variations of the same cited reference. Return to the Cited Reference Search form and enter a cited year when too many references are returned.
Saving a Search History
Save a search history for later use. A saved search history consists of the search queries in the Search History table, along with language and document type selections. It does not contain the timespan selection.
To save a search history, click
, and then select Save History at the top of the Search History table. Then follow the instructions on the page to save the history. For more help, click the Help button at the top of the Save Search History page in ISI Web of Knowledge.
To run a search history, click Open Saved History at the top of the Search History table or on the homepage. Then select a history to run.
Viewing and Selecting Records
From the Search Results – Summary (from a General Search), choose how the results should be sorted. On the right side of the page, choose to Sort By Latest date, Times Cited, Relevance, First Author, or Source Title. Make the selection from the drop down menu. Latest date is the default setting.
To view a single full record, click on the title link. From an individual record:
- Click on “Cited References” to get a list of references cited in this source article.
- Click on “Times Cited” to get a list of aricles citing this source article.
- Click on
to get similar articles.
To view a list of selected items for the total results, create a marked list from the total results. While viewing a full record, add the record to the marked list by clicking on
on the right side of the screen. From the full results list, select records by clicking on the empty boxes next to the record number. Click
to add records to the marked list. After records have been added to the marked list, the number of articles added will appear on the screen. Example: after adding four records to the marked list, the message
will appear on the right hand side of the total results screen.
To display only the marked records, click on
at the top of the screen. Unwanted records may be deselected from the list.
Output
| Print, Save, or E-mail records from individual pages of results list or from an individual record. From EACH page of the results list, mark individual items or select all items on a page and follow the options given in the box on the right side of the screen. Records from EACH page of results can be printed/e-mailed/saved. From within the full record of an individual item, follow the same instructions to print/e-mail/save. To select from all results and then print/save/e-email, mark the records of choice and follow the printing instructions below. Records can be saved as EndNote. |  |

Printing Records
- Go to the Marked List.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page to review the list. Deselect the records not of interest to be printed.
- (Optional) Select a sort option from the drop-down list. Click Sort.
- Under Step 1 at the top of the page, select the bibliographic information to print in addition to the default fields. Default fields are in boldface type. Registered users that are signed in, may define personal default fields. Note: Not all of the fields selected may be available for all records.
- Under Step 2, click Format for Print.
- Click the Print button.
Saving Records
- Go to the Marked List.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page to review the list. Deselect the records not of interest to be saved.
- (Optional) Select a sort option from the drop-down list. Click Sort.
- Under Step 1 at the top of the page, select the bibliographic information to save in addition to the default fields. Default fields are in boldface type. Registered users that are signed in may define personal default fields. Note: Not all of the fields selected may be available for all records.
- Under Step 2, select an output format from the drop down list box next to the Save to File button.
- Click Save to File to open the File Download dialog box.
- Specify a path and file name in the dialog box. When exiting the dialog box, the file is saved in the format specified.
E-Mailing Records
- Go to the Marked List.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page to review the list. Deselect the records not of interest to be e-mailed.
- (Optional) Select a sort option from the drop down list above the marked records. Click Sort.
- Under Step 1 at the top of the page, select the bibliographic information to e-mail in addition to the default fields. Default fields are in boldface type. Registered users that are signed in may define personal default fields. Note: Not all of the fields selected may be available for all records.
- Under Step 2, in the E-mail records to box, enter a single valid e-mail address (for example, sendtoname@institution.com). The records are e-mailed to this address.
- (Optional) In the Return e-mail box, enter a single valid e-mail address (for example, yourname@institution.com). This address displays in the From box in the recipient's e-mail.
- (Optional) In the Notes box, enter a note to add to the top of the e-mail message (up to 250 characters).
- Click E-mail.
Locating Documents at UWM Libraries
- To determine if the UWM Libraries own a specific journal or book cited in the results list or has the full text of the journal available in another online resource, click
at the bottom of the citation.
- If the journal is available full text in an online resource, select the database of choice from the options given and follow the instructions to locate the article.
- If the journal is not available full text in an online resource, follow the link to the UWM Libraries to check for print holdings. Locate the call number and holdings in the PantherCat record.
- If a title does not appear in the libraries' catalog nor is available full text online, request the journals through Interlibrary Loan and the books through UW System borrowing or Interlibrary Loan.
Web of Science Alerts
- Sign up to save searches and receive weekly email alerts or citation alerts. Follow the instructions given in the UWM Libraries guide EMAIL ALERT SERVICES, or follow the instructions from the link on the right side of the screen from each full record.

Hints for Searching
- Case is irrelevant in typing the search terms.
- Common words should be avoided as they are disregarded in the search, except as sequence indicators. These “stopwords” include: articles, prepositions, pronoun, conjunctions, many common verbs, and some commonly used abbreviations (anon, dr, et, spp, vol, vols, vs).
