In addition to general encyclopedias, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica or Americana, which traditionally have attempted to summarize the whole span of knowledge, there are many encyclopedias with more limited scope but greater depth of treatment. Subject encyclopedias are valuable in a number of ways: for reference concerning particular matters of fact, for students beginning research projects, and for consultation by specialists seeking an overview of other disciplines. These volumes are often a source for useful references and bibliographic citations.
