OVERVIEW: The State Personal Income (SPI) CD-ROM contains state economic estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis' (BEA) Regional Economic Information System. SPI includes annual estimates of income by major source and per capita personal income as well as wage and salary disbursements, full and part-time employment, and wage and salary employment by Standard Industrial Classification code (SIC) for the entire United States, individual states, and specified regions. The data contained on the SPI CD-ROM for years 1929 and on are also available on the Internet from the Bureau of Economic Analysis at http://www.bea.doc.gov/bea/regional/spi/.
INSTRUCTIONS:
The State Personal Income CD-ROM contains two software programs to access the State Annual Tables; one program for each of two year groups, 1929-1957 and 1958-current. Under the File menu is a menu item that allows switching between the two year groups.
1. Select a Table
2. Select a Geographic Location
3. Select a Time Period
4. Display Data
Use the Display One Line option to compare a single variable for all the geographic areas in the nation. While the table is displayed, select/highlight a line. Then either click on the icon of the U.S. map or select File from the top menu bar and then Display One Line. A new window will display the variable for all areas.
PRINTING:
Data tables can be printed by selecting File on the top menu bar and then choosing Print Active Window or Print Table for Selected Areas. Print Active Window will print the contents of the currently displayed or active window. Print Table for Selected Areas will print the selected table for all selected geographic areas. When printing a table, an option to include the table's footnotes is available. If an "invalid property value error" is displayed while printing, a font needs to be selected. Click on the Change Font button in the Print Settings window, and select a new font and font size.
DOWNLOADING:
Downloading is available for all of the data tables, with the exception of the BEARFACTS narratives. Place a disk in drive a:\. Select File from the top menu bar, then choose Export to File. A box will appear listing all the lines of data in the selected table. Select individual lines of data to be downloaded. For more than one line, hold down the control key while selecting. To download all lines, click on the ALL button. Once the selection has been made, click OK. A box will appear with download/export options:
HELP:
Select Help from the top menu bar. Read Quick start for an overview, or select Contents or Search for detailed information on a specific topic.
EXIT:
Select File from the top menu bar, then select Exit to quit the database.
Click on the arrow at the right side of the Table menu. For an index of tables by type of estimate, click on Help on the top menu bar and then on Index of Tables. For detailed information about a specific table, select the table and then click on Documentation from the top menu bar to access a summary and the footnotes for that table. The following tables are available for selection:The first section of SA05 presents summary statistics for a state: total personal income, population (annual Census Bureau estimate), and per capita personal income. The second section presents the derivation of personal income: earnings (e.g., wages and salaries, dividends, and interest) less deductions from earnings (e.g. contributions for social insurance). Since estimates are primarily based on the residents' place of work rather than place of residence, the data are adjusted for interstate commuters. The third section presents estimates of earnings by type of payment and by industry (Standard Industrial Classification two-digit level).
This table contains estimates of employment, which is measured as the average annual number of jobs (full-time plus part-time). The data are organized by type of payment (wage and salary or self-employment) and by industry (SIC two-digit level). The industry data reflect a combination of both types of payments. *Not available for years 1929-1957.
Estimates of wage and salary employment by industry (SIC two-digit detail) are presented in this table. Employment is measured as the average annual number of jobs (full-time plus part-time). *Not available for years 1929-1957.
This table provides two summaries of general economic data for the specified region. The place of residence profile includes estimates of total personal income, population, and per capita personal income as well as a derivation of personal income. The place of work profile includes estimates of total earnings, total employment, and average earnings per job. *Not available for years 1929-1957.
The table contains estimates of transfer payments made by government or business to individuals and to nonprofit institutions serving individuals. Transfer payments are income payments to persons for which they do not render services in the current period. The table divides the payments to individuals into several groups, including retirement and disability insurance benefit payments, medical payments, income maintenance benefit payments, unemployment insurance benefit payments, and business payments (primarily personal injury liability payments). Payments to nonprofit institutions are divided into federal government payments, state and local government payments, and business payments (corporate gifts).
This table includes detailed estimates of farm gross income and production expenses as well as a derivation of total farm labor and proprietors' income. The derivation includes several different measures of farm income, including realized net income (gross farm income less production expenses), total net income (realized net income modified to reflect current production through a change-in-inventory adjustment), farm proprietors' income (net income less the income of corporate farms), and total farm earnings (farm proprietors' income plus all farm wages and salaries). *Not available for years 1929-1957.
This table provides estimates of disposable personal income as well as personal tax and non-tax payments (PTNT) to the government. PTNT, primarily taxes, fines, and fees, is subtracted from personal income to yield disposable income (income available to persons for spending and saving). PTNT is presented by level of government (federal, state, local), and by type of payment for each level.
BEARFACTS are narrative summaries of data from SA05, Personal Income by Major Source and Earnings by Industry. The summaries are available in two versions, one that presents growth rates for the most recent year and one that presents the average annual growth rate for the most recent ten-year period. Each version has four sections:
Click on the Select States button. Scroll through the list and select/highlight one or more places: the entire country, individual states, or regions. (For an explanation of regional divisions, click on Documentation on the top menu bar and then select BEA Regions). To choose more than one location, hold down the control (Ctrl) key while selecting/highlighting each area. After selecting the desired location(s), click the OK button.
Select the Years menu by clicking on the arrow on the right side of the menu. Highlight a preset range of years (all years, last 5 years, or last 10 years) or click on the Choose Selected Years button. In the year list, select an individual year or hold down the control key while selecting multiple years. Click on OK to continue.
Select File from the top menu bar and then click on Display or click on the display arrow pointing to the right. Each display will include one selected geographic area. To move between areas, click on the right and left display arrows on the icon.
