RILM
(Repértoire International de Littérature Musicale)
RILM is an international index of scholarly writings on music and related disciplines, including dance, ethnomusicology, instruments and voice, and librarianship. Nearly 500 journal titles are represented, covering over 200 languages. Along with journal articles, there is select coverage of books, conference proceedings, dissertations, collections of essays, ethnographic recordings, discographies, concert reviews, etc. The date coverage for the online database is from 1967. The corresponding print index, RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, 1967-1997, is located in the Music Library, (RMU) ML 1 .I83. Indexing in RILM includes original language titles and title translations in English.
BASIC SEARCH
For a Basic search, type one or more words or phrases in the Find box.
- Phrases must be surrounded by quotation marks, i.e., "historical musicology" OR jazz "new orleans."
- Use the truncation (*) and wildcard(?) symbols to search for terms with various endings, unknown characters, or multiple spellings.
- To use truncation, enter the beginning of a search word and replace the ending with an *. For example, typing music* will find entries containing music, musical, musician, etc. The wildcard symbol (?) replaces a single character. For example, searching for wom?n will find all entries containing women and woman.
- Searches can be limited to retrieve only records available full text, peer reviewed, terms in the main record, terms in the abstract, by a date range, in a specific journal, etc.
- After the terms have been entered in the text box, click on
. The results list will consist of entries containing all of the words or phrases
ADVANCED SEARCH
Click on the [Advanced Search] button, and enter a word or phrase in the Find box.
- Next, use the drop down menu list to the right of the search box to select a field to search. Searches can be done across Select a Field (searches all fields) or in a choice of specific fields, including Author, article Title, Geographic Term, People, and Subject.
- To connect multiple search terms, use the operators and, or, not by clicking on the drop down menu located to the left of the search boxes. Additional rows of search boxes can be added.
- In addition to the limiting options described in the Basic Search section, the search can also be limited to articles in a specific language, document type, term found as a major topic, or place of publication/production.
Result List
- The Result List consists of those articles that include the search terms either in the citation, the abstract, or the assigned subject headings.
- From the results of a search, limit them by journal articles, books, dissertations, festschriften, etc.
- Click on an underlined title to display the full description of the article, which includes the citation and the abstract.
- If available, click on a [Full Text] link to view the full text of the article. Full text is not available for all articles.
- To mark entries for printing, e-mailing, or saving, click on "Add to Folder" from above the citation and abstract within an individual entry or, from the Result List, click on the Add icon to the right of each entry.
Locating Articles at UWM Libraries
- If the article is available in RILM, click on the appropriate full text link to retrieve the article.
- To determine if the UWM Libraries own a specific journal cited in the Result List which is not available full text online in RILM, click on
.
- Choices will appear - the journal title is available full text in another database or to search the online catalog, PantherCat.
- If the journal is full text in another database, click on the link to retrieve the article from that database.
- If the UWM Libraries own the journal, click on the title that is relevant to the citation found. Locate the call number and holdings in the PantherCat record.
Printing, Saving, or E-mailing Search Results 
- To print from an individual record:
- To print the full text of an article, have the full text on the screen, then select print on the browser bar and follow the instructions.
- To print the PDF full text only, without the citation/abstract information, use the print commands on the Adobe bar above the text frame.
- To print the citation information and HTML full text, click on the the Print icon. The default option is Detailed Citation and Abstract; change to select only the Brief Citation (the article title and author, journal date and volume and pagination), or the Brief Citation and Abstract.
- Next, click on Print in the Print Manager box, then use the Print button on the web browser to print the information as displayed on the screen.
- To E-mail from an individual record:
- Click on the E-mail icon at the top of the screen.
- Select the format to E-mail. The default option is Detailed Citation and Abstract; change to select only the Brief Citation (the article title and author, journal date and volume and pagination), or the Brief Citation and Abstract.
- Click in the box to include any available full text; the choice will vary if article is in HTML or PDF format. Full text may appear as a link or an attachment.
- Enter a full E-mail address and a subject (optional).
- Click on Send in the E-Mail Manager box.
- To save from an individual record:
- Click on the Save icon at the top of the screen.
- The default option is Detailed Citation and Abstract; change to select only the Brief Citation (the article title and author, journal date and volume and pagination), or the Brief Citation and Abstract.
- Click in the box to include any available full text. Full text may appear as a link.
- Next, click on Save button in the Save Manager box, select File, then Save As from the web browser menu. In the Save as window, select the A drive, and type in a file name.
- To print, E-mail, or save multiple items from the Result list or Folder:
- To print the entire list of results, click on the print, E-mail or save icon of choice and follow the instructions above.
- To print only the selected list of entries (marked items), click on "Folder" at the top of the screen. Unwanted items can be deleted from the folder listing. Follow the directions for printing, E-mailing, or saving an individual record.
