PROQUEST NEWSPAPERS

ProQuest Newspapers provides bibliographic, and selected full text, access to major regional, national, and international newspapers; dates of coverage may vary, many are covered from 1986. Select ProQuest Newspapers or the companion, Wisconsin Newsstand, from the alphabetical list under "Find Articles: Databases A-Z."

ProQuest Newspapers is a valuable resource for national and international activities, business and financial news, the political climate worldwide, and current events. The companion, Wisconsin Newsstand, will cover local topics and local coverage of national topics; information and perspectives not available from the national resources. While most citations will include a brief abstract with the bibliographic citation, many of the materials are full text online. Dates of coverage for individual titles vary; Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is indexed from 1994. Companion resources include the ProQuest Historical Newspapers: New York Times, which has the full text of the New York Times from 1851-3 years ago (some photographs, etc., may be available in the microform version only), the ProQuest Historical Newspapers: Chicago Tribune, which has the full text of the Chicago Tribune from 1849-1985, and LexisNexis Academic which indexes, with full text, national and international major newspapers.


There are several different methods for conducting searches in ProQuest Newspapers:

Basic Search

  • The initial search screen is the Basic Search.
  • Type one or more words or a phrase describing the topic.

  • Combine keywords with the operators and, or, not. Use quotation marks for phrases longer than two words (e.g., "presidential election"). Use the ? symbol to search for words with a common root (e.g., "politi?" to find politics, politician, political, etc.). Use "More Search Options" to limit a search to a specific journal title or by an author,or to limit the search to words found in specific areas of the citation, or to a specific document type.

    Advanced Search

    • To use the Advanced search, click on
    • Conduct searches within any of the indexed fields, including citation and abstract, abstract, document title, author, company/org, location, image caption, person, product name, publication title, document type, subject, or document text. For example, perform a search for all of the articles written by Peter Drucker by typing his name in the text box and choosing the "author" field using the down arrow on the right side of the screen.
    • The default choice will be to search for the term(s) in the citation and abstract.
    • Combine multiple search concepts using the connectors, and, or, and not, within 3, pre/1 which are available by clicking on the drop-down menu on the left of each text box. For more information on these connectors, refer to the information on "Operators" in the Help screens in ProQuest Newspapers.

     

    Publication Search
    • To use the Publications search, click on .
    • Type the name of the newspaper in the box to determine if it is indexed. Newspaper titles can also be access by viewing the alphabetical list.
    • Click on the title to view a listing of individual issues of that publication. Check for the dates of indexing and dates that full text is available.
    • Click on a specific issue to access a list of articles.

    RESULTS LIST

    A list of those articles matching the specific search criteria will be displayed with the most recent article first.

    - To view the citation and abstract for an article, click on or on the title of the article.

    - The full text of the article may be available for articles on the Results List. Click on the icon where displayed to view the full text of that article.

    - After viewing an individual citation or article, click on "Back to Results" to return to the list of articles.

    MARKED LIST

    A set of records can be created for later printing, downloading, or emailing. Add articles to the "My Research" list by either clicking on the small box to the far left of each article title on the "Results List" or in the "Mark document" box near the top of the individual article's citation/abstract. After marking articles, click on "My Research." A list containing only the marked records will be displayed.

    A full citation will give the name of the article, author, title of the newspaper and publication place, date of the issue, and page/section number.

    PRINTING, DOWNLOADING, OR EMAILING SEARCH RESULTS

    After displaying an individual article's citation and abstract or full text (if available), it is possible to print or email the record.

    • Printing
      Click on the "Print" icon from an individual record to print the full text of an article. To print multiple citations, go to the "My Research" list and then click on "Print." Follow the instructions given. To print a PDF file, use the "Print" icon on the Adobe tool bar.

    • Emailing
      Click on the "Email" icon from an individual record to email the full text of an article. To email multiple citations, go to the "My Research" list and then click on "Email." Type an email address to which the record is to be sent and a subject header (optional). Then, click on "Send Email."
