This full-text database covers articles from newspapers for “urban affairs” related materials. While not comprehensive, there is broad coverage from over 500 newspapers published in the United States and Canada. These files are especially good for local information. Materials for 1970-1996 are available in print/microfiche format, located in the Microforms area, (MFC) HT 151 .N5x and (MC) HT 1. The electronic version covers 1996-2001: each year must be searched individually. The electronic Newsbank Newsfile is available only on computers from within the UWM Golda Meir Library building.Newspaper articles, from 1986, are available PROQUEST NEWSPAPERS.
BUSINESS NEWSBANK
Similar to Newsbank, this covers business related articles in over 400 resources. Full-text is available for the more current materials. Materials for 1985-1994 are available in print/microfiche format in the Microforms area, (MFC) HF 5001 .B835x and (MC) HF 021. The electronic version covers 1985-2001: 1985-1994 can be searched together, other years must be searched individually. MILWAUKEE JOURNAL/SENTINEL
This contains full-text articles from the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel. While there is relatively comprehensive coverage, there are no ads, photographs, cartoons, obituaries, etc. Complete newspapers can be obtained in the Microforms area. DATES OF COVERAGE ARE 1990-1996: each year must be searched individually. FBIS (FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE)
FBIS is an international source of coverage on economic, political, military, environmental, and sociological news. It covers translated materials from foreign radio and TV broadcasts, with some newspaper or periodical articles. The materials are those reprinted in the FBIS Daily Report series. The text of these materials, published by the federal government, are available in the Microforms area, under the SuDocs numbers [PrEx 7.10:]. The electronic index covers 1991-2002 and is available from the RIS Information Desk, (REF-CD) D 856 .F35.
Select the database (highlight and click even if only one option is given), select the year (years must be searched individually), then select SmartSearch or Customized Search.
In a SmartSearch, enter a term or terms in the available text box. Multiple words entered will be searched as OR unless combined by an appropriate Boolean operator or other special search command (see Searching Techniques); a phrase should have "(quote marks)" around the words to be searched as a phrase. The word or words will be searched in all fields. Enter the term or terms in the text box, and click on SEARCH DATABASE.
In a Customized Search, the word or words can be searched in all fields, or in a specified field. Select the field from those given below the text box (see Specific Fields). Use Boolean operators to combine terms; multiple words entered without a Boolean term will be searched as OR. A phrase should have "(quote marks)" around the words to be searched as a phrase. Enter the term or terms in the text box, select a field to search, and click on SEARCH DATABASE.Searching Techniques
| AND | The citations retrieved will contain both search terms, e.g., Japan and China.
| OR | The citations retrieved will include either term, e.g., sea or ocean. Especially valuable for synonymous terms, particularly for all text searching rather than assigned subject headings.
| NOT | The citations retrieved will include one search term but not the other, e.g., weapons not nuclear. The citations retrieved would include weapons, but would not include nuclear.

Specific Fields
Each of the databases has specific fields that can be searched in a Customized Search. Highlighting a field will display a descriptive note; click on BROWSE after choosing a field to view and select specific items available for that field.

View Results
To view the results of the search, click on DISPLAY SEARCH RESULTS. The citations of the results will be displayed on the left; full-text of the articles will be displayed on the right. Click on the citation of interest to view the full-text. To see the full-text on a full screen, click on "Change Item view"

Searching Another Year
From the search screen, select another year from the menu choice below the text box. After the search terms have been entered, click on SEARCH DATABASE.
From the results list, select another year from the menu choice above the results; the search will automatically be done.
Print/Download
To download or print an individual item, click on the appropriate icon at the top of the screen
. To print or download several items, mark each item by highlighting each entry and clicking on the "Mark" icon
at the top of the screen. After the items are marked, click on the "Print" or "Download" icon. Records may be saved or printed as citation only or full-text. Marking selected text to print or download, as offered in the database, does not work.

Exit
To exit the database, close each window.
