Index Islamicus
| Index Islamicus indexes journal literature, book materials, and other resources covering Islam, the Middle East, and the Muslim world. The online database covers from 1906. Some articles are available full text online. |
Basic Search
- For a Basic search, type one or more words or phrases in the Find box. Use the Boolean operators and, or, not to combine keywords.
- Use the truncation (*) and wildcard (?) symbols to search for terms with various endings, unknown characters, or multiple spellings. To use truncation, enter the beginning of a search word and replace the ending with an *. For example, typing islam* will find entries containing islam, islamic, islams, etc. The wildcard symbol (?) replaces a single character. For example, searching for wom?n will find all entries containing women and woman.
- Search results can be expanded or narrowed using options listed, including:
- - Full Text: Retrieve only full text articles.
- - Publication: Search by keyword within one magazine or journal. To view a list of the journals
- and magazines covered in Index Islamicus, click on the Publications link at the
- top of the screen.
- - Published Date: Search within a specified date range.
- - Also search for related words: Include plurals and synonyms of the search terms.
Advanced Search
- Click on the [Advanced Search] tab.
- Enter a word or phrase in the Find box.
- Next, use the drop down menu list to the right of the search box to select a field to search. Searches can be done across all fields [leave catagory as the default Select a Field (optional)] or in a variety of specific fields, including Author, article Title, and Subject.
- To connect multiple search terms, use the operators and, or, not by clicking on the drop down menu located to the left of the search boxes.
- In addition to the search options described above in the Basic Search section, the search can also be limited to document type, e.g., articles, books, or book chapters..
Result List
- The Result List consists of those articles that include the search terms either in the citation – the basic information needed to locate the article, the abstract – a brief summary of the article, or the assigned subject headings. If the search is expanded to include full text searching, the search will also find the keywords within the text of the article.
- Click on an underlined title to display the full description of the article, which includes the citation and the abstract.
- If available, click on a [Full Text] icon {PDF, HTML, or Linked} to view the full text of the article. Full text is not available for all articles.
- To mark entries for printing, e-mailing, or saving, click on "Add to Folder" from above the citation and abstract within an individual entry or, from the Result List, click on the Add icon to the right of each entry.
Locating Journal Articles at UWM Libraries:
- For the articles that are available full text in Index Islamicus, click on the full text or pdf icon of choice.
- For journal articles not full text: To determine if the UWM Libraries own a specific journal cited in the results list or has the full text of the journal available in another online resource, click
at the bottom of the citation.
- If the journal is available full text in an online resource, select the database of choice from the options given and follow the instructions to locate the article.
- If the journal is not available full text in an online resource, follow the link to the UWM Libraries to check for print holdings. Locate the call number and holdings in the PantherCat record. In the record entry of the UWM Libraries, note the call number, holdings, and location information. Issues listed under Latest Issues: are located in the Current Periodicals area, Lower level, west wing. Issues listed under Library Has: are located in the stacks or the specified special location under Location or in Notes.
- If a title does not appear in the libraries' catalog nor is available full text online, request the journals through Interlibrary Loan.
- Inquire at the RIS Information Desk for further information.
Printing, Saving, E-mailing, or Exporting Search Results 
- To print from an individual record:
- To print the full text of an article, have the full text on the screen, then select print on the browser bar and follow the instructions.
- To print the PDF full text only, without the citation/abstract information, use the print commands on the Adobe bar above the text frame.
- To print the citation informationand HTML full text, click on the the Print icon. The default option is Detailed Citation and Abstract; change to select only the Brief Citation (the article title and author, journal date and volume and pagination), or the Brief Citation and Abstract.
- Next, click on Print in the Print Manager box, then use the Print button on the web browser to print the information as displayed on the screen.
- To e-mail from an individual record:
- Click on the e-mail icon at the top of the screen.
- Select the format to e-mail:
- The default option is Detailed Citation and Abstract; change to select only the Brief Citation (the article title and author, journal date and volume and pagination), or the Brief Citation and Abstract.
- Click in the box to include any available full text; the choice will vary if article is in HTML or PDF format. Full text may appear as a link or an attachment.
- Enter a full e-mail address and a subject (optional).
- Click on Send in the E-Mail Manager box.
- To save/export from an individual record:
- Click on the Save icon at the top of the screen.
- The default option is Detailed Citation and Abstract; change to select only the Brief Citation (the article title and author, journal date and volume and pagination), or the Brief Citation and Abstract.
- Click in the box to include any available full text. Full text may appear as a link.
- Next, click on Save button in the Save Manager box, select File, then Save As from the web browser menu. In the Save as window, select the A drive, and type in a file name.
- Click on the Export icon at the top of the screen.
- Select the option from those offered, e.g., RefWorks, EndNote, etc.
- Click on Save.
- To print, e-mail, save, or export multiple items:
- To print the entire list of results, add ALL items to the Folder, then click on "Folder" at the top of the screen. Click on the print, e-mail, save, or export icon of choice and follow the instructions above.
- To print multiple selected entries (marked items), click on "Folder" at the top of the screen after having added items of choice to the Folder. Unwanted items can be deleted from the folder listing. Follow the directions for printing, E-mailing, or saving/exporting an individual record.
- Linked full text items cannot be e-mailed as part of a folder; retrieve the item from the results list and then e-mail as an individual record.

To Exit Index Islamicus, click on the Home button on the browser bar.
