PERIODICAL INDEXES AND ABSTRACTS

A periodical index is a guide to articles in a group of periodicals, journals, or newspapers. Indexes and abstracts provide bibliographic information for an article; an abstract also provides a brief summary of the article. The scope of indexes and abstracts runs from the general, Reader's Guide Full Text, to coverage of a specialized subject area, Geographical Abstracts. Indexes or abstracts are available in various formats, including print, CD-ROM, and electronic. Many of the electronic indexes also include select full text articles. Many indexes had variant titles over the years; the latest title is listed, with holdings for all years.

Indexes and abstracts are used to locate current and retrospective articles pertaining to a specific subject. To use an index, look under a subject heading/keyword dealing with the desired topic. If nothing is found, use a related heading, a broader term, or a narrower term. A "See" reference may be provided from a subject heading which is not used to one which is used; in other instances, a "See also" reference indicates additional subject headings. Electronic indexes generally allow for keyword searching in which the search will retrieve a specified word(s) in the titles, abstracts, or full text of articles, as well as standardized subject headings.

In addition to a subject approach, most periodical indexes and abstracts provide author access: special care is needed in author searching as there are variances in how an author's name is cited. Some print resources also have title searching available.

After selecting pertinent article citations, the next step is to determine whether the library owns that periodical and the year needed. Many electronic indexes have the full text of the articles available. For articles not full text online, check "Citation Linker" under the Electronic Journals list on the UWM Libraries' home page. Periodical titles are listed in PantherCat, the online catalog, which gives the call number, library's holdings, and location. Periodicals are shelved by call number, either in the Current Periodicals Area, in the stacks, or other specified location. Users should use "Citation Linker" to search the catalog and check for complete availability within the UWM Libraries. The location in this list, c/s, refers to the Libraries compact shelving.
