Index to Current Urban Documents (ICUD)
USER GUIDE

The Index to Current Urban Documents is a searchable guide to reports and research generated by local government agencies, civic organizations, academic and research organizations, public libraries, and metropolitan and regional planning agencies in approximately 500 selected cities in the United States and Canada. Materials are indexed back to 1995. Full-text documents are available online from selected municipalities within Region III. Region III includes municipalities from the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

To locate urban documents dated 1972-1994, use the print Index to Current Urban Documents, located in the Reference Collection (REF) HT 151 .I5x. The UWM Libraries hold the full-text Urban Documents Microfiche Collection for selected municipalities indexed by this print set. BROWSING OPTIONS:

Use the “Browse by Topics” option to locate materials by predefined broad topic terms.

OR
Use the “Browse by Municipalities” option to locate materials by municipality.

QUICK SEARCH OPTION:

Enter words or phrases in the “Quick Search” text box to locate materials containing the terms entered. Boolean searching techniques can be used in all searches.

MULTIPLE CRITERIA SEARCH OPTIONS:

Enter words or phrases in the "Search by keyword" text box. Select all categories from municipality, state, and year preferred. Click the "Search" button to process the search. Options for searching include:

  • “Search by Keyword” text box = locate materials containing the terms entered.

  • “Search by Topic” = locate materials using known subject headings. If a subject heading is not known, use the [Select a Topic] link to select a topic from the pop-up box (refers to the same list as "Browse by Topics"). Topic terms are assigned to each ICUD document to assist the user in locating documents containing similar information.

  • “Search by Municipality” drop down menu = select one or more municipalities.

  • “Search by State” drop down menu = select one or more states.

  • “Search by Year” drop down menu = select one or more years.

 

DISPLAYING ICUD DOCUMENTS:

Brief records in ICUD will display the city or county the document is published by, the government agency, title, date, number of pages, party responsible for preparing the document, a link to the full text document (if available), a list of index topics, and the agency's web address (when available). To view the complete document, click "PDF": UWM Libraries does not subscribe to all geographic regions covered b ICUD.

URBAN DOCUMENTS MICROFICHE COLLECTION FULL-TEXT LIST:

The UWM Libraries hold the full-text Urban Documents Microfiche from the municipalities listed below. To locate the full-text documents for these cities, locate the publication's accession number in the Index to Current Urban Documents (REF) HT 151 .I5x.

An example of an accession number for a document published by the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin would look like this: MIWI – 0284.
MI = Milwaukee, WI = Wisconsin, 0284 = number.

Once the accession number has been located, the microfiche can be retrieved in the Microforms Collection (lower level, west wing). In addition to the accession number, the call number for the city of interest will be needed (consult the list below).

PRINTING:

  1. To print citations for the entries retrieved, choose File-Print from the web browser, verify material to be printed by using print preview, and click “Ok.” The printing option allows the printing of all entries or entries by page, but does not allow for the printing of individual entries.

  2. To print a full-text PDF document, open the PDF file/document and select the printer icon on the Adobe Acrobat browser. To print an entire file, click “Ok.” To print a selected page or pages, click on “Pages” under Print Range, then indicate the desired page range for printing.

Please note that many of these documents are large; some are hundreds of pages long. Please consider saving the file to a disk, or print only the pages that are needed.

DOWNLOADING:

Downloading Citations:

Citations will save as text files and can be opened using any word processing software. To download citations to a disk, choose File-Save As from the web browser, then choose A: drive from the drop down menu. Name the file and click “Ok.”

Downloading Full-text PDF files:

To save full-text PDF files to a disk, open the file in Acrobat Reader. Choose the disk symbol on the Acrobat Reader browser, then choose the A: drive from the drop down menu. Click “Ok.” Full-text PDF files do not save as text documents; to open downloaded PDF files, use Adobe Acrobat Reader software.
