HIGHWIRE PRESS

HighWire is an electronic database, which indexes over 1,000 journals from 1948 to the present in four fields of sciences: biological, medical, social, and physical. Bibliographic citations and abstracts are provided with full text articles for over 345 publications. Articles from the over 4,500 journals indexed in PubMed (MEDLINE) are also included. Full text is only accessible when the UWM Libraries have an online subscription to the cited publication, or when the publisher offers the publication for free; purchasing an article is an option for individual users. Select journal coverage is available back to 1844.

Subject coverage in the biological sciences includes articles in 21 categories including: biochemistry, cell biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, microbiology, physiology, and plant biology. In medical sciences, 34 categories are represented: medicine, geriatrics, nutrition, occupational health, and pediatrics. There are 12 areas of coverage in physical sciences including gastronomy, chemistry, physics, and engineering. In the social sciences field, anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, and sociology are covered.

Access to HighWire is available from the UWM Libraries' homepage. From the link, “Find Articles: Resources A-Z,” select “H,” scroll down to “HighWire Press,” and click on the link.

From the initial screen, do a basic search:

  1. This screen allows for a keyword or author search. Type in the author or keywords (or a combination of these) in the search boxes provided.

To select specific journal(s) to search, check the individual title(s) from the alphabetical list of journals listed under the search box.

  2. Designate the category of articles to be searched. Mark "HighWire-hosted only" or "All (including PubMed)." "My Favorite Journals" registration is not included in the UWM subscription. The default setting is "HighWire-hosted only."
