Find It! Reported Problems
Library users and staff have reported the following problems in using the Find It! system. If you are experiencing another repeated difficulty with the service, please submit your comments to Ask a Librarian. If you are having problems with a specific item link, please include all pertinent information.
Citation Linker and Find It! Menu Targets
The use of title abbreviations is not fully supported. Also, the title cannot be truncated when searching.
The Find It! link does not always lead directly to the article. In this case a title search within the database is required.
Sometimes a Find It! link will show even though the item is not available in the listed database. Unfortunately, this often indicates an error in the date and title coverage information provided to us by the Find It! system vendor, and is not under our direct control.
Conversely, some databases and their holdings are not entered as Find It! sources (ex. NewspaperARCHIVE Elite, ERIC Documents, Digital Dissertations), and will therefore not be shown in the Find It! menu. Some titles available in databases are also not available via the Find It! service. Approximately 3,000 title links, as reported by the previous Electronic Journals List, are not available via Find It!
Sometimes, clicking on a "full text" link will generate an error message and/or not connect to the article. There may be a typo or error in the citation as reported in the database, which Find It! uses to link to the article. Some databases allow you to directly modify citation information to attempt to locate the appropriate article, e.g. remove one or more components, such as the start page number, and try the search again.
If you are requesting an Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) request for a dissertation, the wrong ILL form may be generated by the Find It! menu. After logging into the ILLiad system, click on Exit to Main Menu in the upper right corner and click on "Request a Thesis" to fill in the correct form. Then, manually enter the information on the dissertation.
Rush ILL services are not available via the Find It! menu.
Find It! Links Within Databases
ABC-CLIO (Historical Abstracts and America: History and Life)
The Find It! button may not always appear. Database records for books may not show a Find It! button.
Annual Reviews
Many Find It! links in Annual Reviews use malformed journal abbreviations (with periods or author names for example), yielding an empty Find It! menu.
Engineering Village 2
The Find It! button is not displayed on the Results list. Click on the Abstract or Detailed Record to view the Find It! option.
ERIC
The UWM Libraries have a majority of the “ERIC documents” (item records with an ED number) available on microfiche in the Curriculum Library (2 nd floor, East). This is not fully reflected in the Find It! menu, which only provides a interlibrary loan link for these records. To view these items, please note the ED number and inquire at the Curriculum Library.
The EBSCOhost version of ERIC also includes "Full Text from ERIC" links for documents that may be available online via the ERIC Database.
IEEE Xplore
In some cases, the link in the Find It! menu to full text in IEEE Xplore does not work. Go directly to the IEEE database on the Resources A-Z page to search for the article.
JSTOR
JSTOR only offers Find It! links for recent content.
PsycINFO and MLA Bibliography
Find It! links for books and book chapters may not function properly. It is best to check the catalog directly for these items.
Wilson
Find It! links do not pop up in a new window. Find It! links appear for titles that are available fill-text via WilsonWeb.
