CITED REFERENCE SEARCHING & JOURNAL IMPACT FACTORS

Cited Reference Searching helps determine if a scholarly publication has been subsequently cited within another publication, through means of a hotlink, Index Works Cited lists, or searchable full-text.

Journal Impact Factors are generally accepted numbers used for ranking, categorizing, and comparing scholarly journals within an academic discipline. A journal's impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article" in that journal has been cited within a set period of time. Journals assigned the highest impact factors are perceived to have more influence on the discipline than those journals assigned lower numbers.

  1. Cited Reference Searching -- or -- Who has been citing my article?
Hot Button to Cited Sources - Research databases with a built-in "CIted By" feature (example: ISI Web of Knowledge).

Searching Within Reference Lists -- Primarily discipline-based databases with searchable Works Cited fields (example: Sociological Abstracts).

Searching Within Full-Text -- Research databases with searchable full-text -- search within the bibliography following every scholarly article and/or locate parenthetical references to specific works within the text (example: ABI Inform).

World Wide Web -- Identify publications that have been cited in non-traditional sources.

  2. Determining where journals are indexed -- or -- Which database do I check?
    See "Research Databases."
