| Ingenta User Guide |
IngentaConnect, indexing over 28,000 scholarly journals, is a database with a broad multidisciplinary scope - including fields such as engineering, computer and information science, medicine, science and technology, earth and environmental sciences, biology and life sciences, mathematics, psychology, social sciences, business, and arts and humanities. Strengths in the science fields were enhanced by Ingenta’s acquisition of the CARL Uncover database. Dates of coverage vary for each title, with general coverage from 1988. Select full text is available: full text for journals to which UWM has an online subscription may be accessed from the results list; other full text articles may be ordered, for a fee, by the user. An alert service for newly published articles is available for UWM faculty, staff, and students.
Searching of Ingenta is predominately by author and title fields, although keyword searching of the brief summaries is also available. Journal issues can be browsed by current issue or back issues, listing the tables of contents for those issues indexed.
Searching Ingenta:
Quick Search
- For a quick search, type the word(s) or phrase in the text box. Boolean operators may be used in a quick search and words may be truncated to retrieve materials with alternative endings, e.g., dinosaur* will retrieve dinosaur, dinosaurs, dinosauria. Click on “Search.”
Advanced Search
- To search within specific fields or to combine categories, click on “Advanced Search” and search within the available categories (title/keyword/abstract, author, or publication title). A search may be limited to a particular issue, year, or year span.
When searching by author, use lastname firstname or initials. Author names do not always use the first name, so searching by first name, first initial, or first and middle initials, e.g., currie, philip or currie p or currie pj, may all be necessary.
Browse Publications
To search Ingenta for issues in a known publication, click on
.
- Browsable options will appear: publication title, broad subject area, or publisher. After using the alphabetical lists or selecting by category, find the journal of interest. Issues covered by Ingenta will be listed; some as available full text, others only as table of contents listing. This does NOT indicate whether UWM Libraries has the full text available, just that the full text is available via Ingenta either online or for purchase. Select either the issue of interest to retrieve the tables of contents.

Results Lists:
The basic bibliographic citation information is available in the results list; some articles may have an abstract available, and some may be available full text. To view any available abstract of a specific article, click on the title. To print the citation and available abstract, use the print command on the web browser bar.

| Users should register/sign in to make full use of the system, including marking and printing/downloading/emailing records. To select/mark specific entries to make a specialized list of useful resources, check the box in front of each item, then click "update marked list." Marked items will remain marked when scrolling through the full results list. To view only those marked items, click on and the marked items will be displayed. Make further selections to obtain the most appropriate citations by deleting unwanted items from the Marked List: by clicking on “Delete.” |
Emailing, Downloading, or Printing:
The entire list of results or only the marked list can be emailed, downloaded/exported, or printed. From either list select the preferred option -- display for printing/downloading or emailing.
When selecting the printing (print or export (BIDS) option, a separate screen showing the revised format will appear; follow the web browser bar to print.
When selecting the downloading (export (EndNote) option, follow the instructions on the screen to save the record, which can the be retrieved through a word processing program.
To email, click on the appropiate button in the full results list or the marked results list, and fill in the subsequent boxes.

To do another search, fill in the text box for the “Quick Search” to the right, or click on "Advanced Search" and follow the same steps as originally done.
