Biological Abstracts
This electronic counterpart of the print Biological Abstracts (BA) (BIOSIS), covers over 5,000 journals in the life sciences; online coverage is from 1990. Major changes in thesaurus terms and usage of these terms was done in 1993; use a keyword search if a thesaurus term is not located. The thesaurus and hierarchical arrangements of concepts are explained in the BIOSIS search guide, (Info Desk Z 695 .1 .B5 B56x). The print Biological Abstracts, from 1926-1989, is available in the general stacks, 2nd floor, west wing (QH 301 .B37).
SEARCHING
Search

- In the Search text entry boxes, type search/topic terms, and select an appropriate field from the droop-down menu. Use Boolean search operators (and, or, not, or same) with each text box, or between the text boxes to make the search more specific. For example, dinosaur and montana will find items which include both terms. Use the wildcard/truncation (*) to search multiple terms in one search, e.g., dinosaur* will retrieve dinosaur, dinosaurs, dinosaurian, etc. Truncation can only be used with terms of at least 3 characters.

- For a more specific search, add additional search boxes by clicking on the"Add Another Field link.
- Click Search.
- Every search is added to the Search History table.

Field Searching
Search for records within specific fields, such as by topic or author name. Some fields have assigned thesaurus terms or search tips; to view these lists, click on
adjacent to the search box. Every search is added to the Search History table.
- Search for a specific term/name or use the "browse" feature for these fields:
- Author - enter the last name and first or first/second initials*. Use the truncation * as not all citations include the full names of individuals.
- Publication name
- Taxonomic data
- Major concepts
- Concept codes
- Use the tips or drop-down menus given by the search box for these :
- Topic - use quotation marks around a phrase and use Boolean operators to link terms
- Title
- Address (author affiliation)
- Year published (Publication year or range of years)
- Chemical and biochemical
- Identifying codes (such as ISSN number)
- Literature type
- Language
- Taxa notes
Viewing and Selecting Records

Full text articles are indicated in the results list.
If too many results are returned, narrow the results by selecting from the pre-assigned catagories listed to the left of the results. A search may also be refined by adding terms or limits. |
Output
Print, save, or e-mail records from individual pages of results list or from an individual record. From EACH page of the results list, mark individual items or select all items on a page and follow the options given in the box at the bottom of the screen. Records from EACH page of results can be printed, saved, or e-mailed. Once items have been marked, click on
at the top of the screen. Follow the instructions given. From within the full record of an individual item, follow the same instructions to print or e-mail.

Locating Documents at UWM Libraries
- To determine if the UWM Libraries own a specific journal cited in the results list or has the full text of the journal available in another online resource, click
at the bottom of the citation.
- If the journal is available full text in an online resource, select the database of choice from the options given and follow the instructions to locate the article.
- If the journal is not available full text in an online resource, follow the link to the UWM Libraries to check for print holdings. Locate the call number and holdings in the PantherCat record.
- If a title does not appear in the libraries' catalog nor is available full text online, request the journals through Interlibrary Loan.

- Sign up to save searches and receive weekly email alerts or citation alerts. Follow the instructions given in the UWM Libraries guide EMAIL ALERT SERVICES, or follow the instructions from the links at the top of the screen.
