Periodical guides from the Wilson Company allow searching for information in periodicals and selected books in a variety of subject areas. From the search page of any of the databases, multiple or all of the Wilson databases can be checked for simultaneous searching. Most have selected full text articles available. The database "OmniFile" enables the user to select one or more of the Wilson databases to search at one time - not all full text articles will be retrieved in an "OmniFile" search.
Selecting the Database:
For doing research in biology and agriculture studies, Biological & Agricultural Index will assist the user to find article citations in nearly 300 periodicals. In addition to the extensive coverage of agricultural related subjects, the index also includes a wide range of biological studies, such as: animal sciences, botany, ecology, environmental science, fishery science, forestry, limnology, paleontology, soil science, wildlife management, and zoology. Online coverage is from 1983 to present; the corresponding print resource will cover the prior years to 1927; for related indexes see Biological Abstracts, General Science Index/General Science Full Text, Geobase, and Agricola.
Basic Search:
In a Basic Search, enter a topic (word or phrase) in the "Find" box, then click on START. The search will search all fields. To limit a search term(s) to a specific field (author, title, subject) or range of publication years, use the Browse or Advanced Search. To search words as a phrase, use "quotation marks" around the phrase ("banking principles"). Use boolean operators to combine words (AND, OR, NOT). Search terms will be automatically linked as OR unless otherwise specified. If a word has several possible endings, use the asterisk "*" to truncate; for a single letter variation, use the wildcard "?." The database may automatically search for related words applicable for that subject field. Check the Thesaurus of each database for the controlled vocabularly of that field for more precise searching or to learn related terms for a more complete search.
Coverage is from approximately 1983 to present. Corresponding available print indexes for these titles may cover prior years.

| Example: | research* | searches for research, researching, researcher, etc.
| diet* | searches for diet, diets, dietary, dieting, diethyl, etc.
| Example: | wom?n | searches for women and woman
| Example: | bargaining | will search for bargains, bargaining, negotiating, etc.
| learning | will search for learn, learning, learned, etc.

Advanced Search:
The Advanced Search allows constructing a boolean search, choosing an article type, and limiting by date or other criteria. To construct a search, type a word or phrase in the text entry area. Focus the search on the default category ("ALL" fields) or choose specific fields to search (for example: author, title, journal name, abstract, subject) from the pull-down menu. Select AND, OR, NOT in between the text entry boxes, and enter terms in the additional text entry boxes to formulate a boolean search. If desired, modify the search by selecting from other available options.
If a topic contains more than one idea or concept, combine the search terms by using the boolean operators "and," "or," "not."
| Example: | mainstream* and special | both terms must appear in the entry
| histor* and computers | both terms must appear in the entry
| special or gifted | either term may appear in the entry
| dirt or soils | either term may appear in the entry
| colonies or settlements | either term may appear in the entry
| consequences or penalty | either term may appear in the entry
| dyslexia not mainstreaming | dyslexia must appear as long as mainstreaming does not appear in the entry
| presidents not election | presidents must appear as long as election does not appear in the entry | |
