The Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) and International Repertory of the Literature of Art (RILA) are international scholarly indexes to research in art history. The online databases, covering materials published from 1973 to present, include the fine arts, decorative and applied arts, material culture, photography, and the visual arts aspect of performing arts. BHA was formed by the merger of International Repertory of the Literature of Art (Répertoire International de la Littérature de l'Art: RILA) and Répertoire d'art et d'Archéologie (RA). Répertoire d'art et d'Archéologie covers European art and architecture from the 4th century to 1939 and American art and architecture from the 16th century to 1939. The indexes contain references to journal articles, monographs, collections of essays and other book chapters, conference proceedings, exhibition catalogs, etc.The print Répertoire d'art et d'Archéologie, 1910-1980, is available in Compact Shelving East, Z 5937 .R4/.R42x.
SEARCH THE DATABASES:
Select BHA for coverage 1990 to present; select RILA for coverage 1975-1989, and select RA for online coverage 1973-1989.
Each title is listed individually in the "Databases A-Z" list on the UWM Libraries' home page, with a link to the BHA entry; select the individual title of interest from the description given in the Databases list. To search a combination or all three simultaneously, click on "Databases A-Z," then select "SilverPlatter" from the list of vendors, or select "Change database(s)" from the button given within each database along the top of the screen. Mark the database(s) wanted and click on "Start Searching" in the upper right. Special features not available in all databases will not be available in a combined search.
Use the basic Search or Advanced Search methods for standard searching. Specialized search tools include using a database specific thesaurus or one of the indexes available. Thesaurus searching is only available in BHA.

SEARCH:
In the text entry box, type search terms separated by a Boolean operator (and, or, not, near), select the field/category to search, then click "Search." For example, iconograph* and rembrandt as terms anywhere will find items which include both terms. Terms may be truncated to search multiple terms in one search, e.g., iconograph* will retrieve iconography, iconographic, iconographs, etc..

ADVANCED SEARCH:
The Advanced Search should be used to construct a more complex search. It is possible to limit each of three search terms (single terms, phrases, or groupings of terms) to a particular field by typing in the term, then selecting the field it is to appear in (e.g., citation, title, author, journal name/source, abstract, exhibition, or descriptors). Fields will vary between BHA, RILA, and RA. Use Boolean operators when using more than one term in each text entry box. The terms in each text entry box may then be combined by clicking the circle next to the Boolean operator (and, or, or not). Click "Search."

Limits:
| A basic search may be limited by date on the initial search screen. From basic or advanced searches, narrow the search by additional limits. Click on "More" to get a list of categories of possible limits for a search. Categories available in at least one of the three databases include: language, publication year, document type, historical | ![]() |

Select THESAURUS from the menu choices on top to find correct BHA descriptors, or subject terms. There are no thesauri available from RILA or RA; therefore, when searching multiple databases at one time, thesaurus searching will not be available.

Displaying/Changing/Locating Search Results:
At the top of the results display, the number of results for the query will be noted; entries will be displayed in a brief format. Move through the pages of search results by clicking on the appropriate arrows. To view additional record components of all items in the results list, click on
and select which fields should be displayed (descriptors, language, document type, etc.). To view the complete record of an individual entry, click on "Complete Record" from within that entry. The complete entry will have full bibliographic information, any abstract, assigned descriptors, and other field information. To return to the results list in brief display, click on "Show All Results."
From within an entry, click on
to check whether the UWM Libraries carry that title. If the journal is available full text in another electronic database, a link to that database will appear; otherwise, click on the link for PantherCat to check for UWM Libraries' holdings. For chapters of books, check the BOOK title (BK line) in the catalog, not the title of the individual chapter; for journals, check the title of the journal (SO line).
