Analytical WebBase (Analytical Abstracts)

Analytical WebBase, from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), is a current awareness and information retrieval service for analytical scientists. It is updated weekly by scanning literature from over 100 international journals; journal coverage starts at 1980 and some online full text is available.

Searching Database

There are two search options: Basic Search and Advanced Search. In the Basic Search, enter search terms in the Search Abstracts box to conduct a full text search across all fields. A search will not search the title of an individual article. Use AND, OR and NOT to combine multiple terms. Use a wildcard (*) for truncation, i.e., biolog* retrieves “biology,” “biological” and “biologically.”

In the Advanced Search, combine Index terms and Bibliographic data. There are three specialized index entries: ANALYTE, MATRIX and TECHNIQUE. For example, in the ANALYTE category, search for a particular element (name or symbol), compound or CAS number, i.e., copper, Cu, phenol, 108-95-2. A search for a group of compounds or elements, i.e., amino-acids, metals is also possible. Help on using each Index Term is available through the question mark icon:
A list of index terms is provided for browsing in the MATRIX and TECHNIQUE categories, via the arrow icon () alongside the text entry box. Click on the parent term to expand the list of index terms. Click on the index terms to transfer them to the search box.

For Bibliographic data, several search boxes are provided. The TITLE search runs across all abstracts in the database. Use AND, OR and NOT to combine multiple terms or a wildcard (*) for truncation. In the AUTHOR search use a wildcard (*), i.e., Linton C*, as most author entries do not include a first name; do not use punctuation in an author search.
For a JOURNAL search, use a full title AS USED IN THE DATABASE; these names are available via the arrow icon () alongside the search box -- some are full titles while others are abbreviations. Click on a journal name to transfer it to the box. Alternatively, as a name is typed in the entry box, suggested journal titles appear below the box. Journal names entered by hand must be exactly as shown in the list; use punctuation in a journal title search. To search across multiple journal names, use a semicolon (;) between names i.e.,

J. Anal. At. Spectrom.; J. Am. Chem. Soc.
A search may be limited by language, document type, or publication date.

Amending the Search

To modify the search use any of the following options:

Displaying Results

Select the number of results per page [10, 25, 50 or 100 (the default is 10)] and the DISPLAY MODE from three options:

Sorting Results

Sort the results by Date Published (default) or Journal title.

Viewing Results

Click on the titles of individual articles to view an individual entry, or mark the results of interest and then click on View Selected Records to view a selection of citations.

Locating Articles

The link Access full text link is displayed from the Full view of results and from an individual record. Access the full text online by clicking on Access full text, and then selecting PDF or HTML Article link of the journals available for UWM users. If the article is not full text in Analytical WebBase, click on to check if the article/journal is available online via another database or in print via the UWM Libraries' catalog. For those journals not available, individual articles may be requested via Interlibrary Loan.

Exporting Records

The results can be exported to both email and to reference management software.

Browsing Subject Area

From the Browse Subject Area page, select the subjects of interest and click "Search." All relevant abstracts added to the database within the last month will be displayed.

Help

The Online Help section provides links to the Analytical Abstracts Guide and FAQ.

Alerting Services

Select the titles of interest from the list of the RSC journals and supply your email address to receive table of contents listings as items are added to the database.
