Read a Banned Book!

Visit the display in the Curriculum Library (2 East), pick up a list of the top 10 and top 100 banned books, and check one out!

Banned Books Week emphasizes the freedom to choose or express one's opinion, even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular, as well as the importance of ensuring the availability of those viewpoints to all who wish to read them. The American Library Association [www.ala.org/bbooks] received a total of 546 challenges last year. The number of challenges reflects only incidents reported. For each reported challenge, four or five likely remain unreported.

Banned Books Week in the Virtual World(s)

This year, OIF is working with the Alliance Library System, Alliance Second Life Library, TAP Information Services and the new ALA membership group Virtual Communities and Libraries to provide an interactive experience centered on Banned Books Week, September 29–October 6, 2007, on Second Life, Teen Second Life, MySpace, and Facebook. [OIF's] aims are to help librarians and others to feel comfortable in social networking spaces and to reach out to new audiences.

Second Life/Teen Second Life

To tie in with this year’s theme of "Aye, mateys…celebrate your freedom t' read!," ALA has created a "Pirate Paradise" in Second Life (SL), a 3D virtual world complete with pirate ship and a wharf with interactive displays on banned books. ALA Banned Books Week graphics will be used to create virtual posters, displays and T-shirts that can be worn by Second Life avatars...

Facebook

ALA has set up a Facebook group for librarians and the public who want to share ideas, experiences, events, and banned book recommendations. The name of the group is "Celebrate Your Freedom to Read! Banned Books Week 2007." Beginning September 24, members of the "Celebrate Your Freedom to Read" Facebook group will receive a Banned Books "Challenging Fact of the Day." All are welcome to join the group (search for Banned Books Week 2007)...

MySpace

ALA also has a MySpace page for Banned Books Week. The page features a blog about BBW activities, music, videos, photos from BBW events, and more...

Open House and Book Sale

The UWM Libraries will be hosting an Open House for UWM faculty, staff, and students on Monday, September 17, from noon to 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, September 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Those dates overlap the first two days of the Friends of the Golda Meir Library Fall Used Book Sale. In a break with tradition, the sale's first day will be open to UWM faculty and staff (with valid UWM ID), as well as UWM students. The sale will be held in the fourth floor Conference Center of the library.

The Open House will be held in the first floor reading area of the West Wing of the library. There will be special tours and workshops (see Open House Schedule), a drawing for prizes (including an iPod Shuffle), tables with information, and staff available to answer questions about library resources or library services. Light refreshments will be offered.

Please come, buy a few books, and let the library staff expand your knowledge about how the UWM Libraries can serve you! Attendees do not need to register.
