Learn to locate and use web sites and library databases to find quality human
resources information.
This workshop will take place in room E159 in the east wing of the Library.
Search Strategies
|
Keyword Searching
|
Step 1: State the topic and identify the major concepts or keywords.
| What impact does a dress code have
on employee morale? |
Step 2: List other words that could be used to describe the
same topic.
- Influence
- clothing guidelines
- personnel
- attitudes
|
Step 3: Come up with a few ways to combine terms.
- "Dress codes" and morale
- cloth? and influence
- "dress codes" and (attitudes
or morale)
- cloth? and not fashion

|
Boolean Operators
|
- AND - all terms must be present
- OR - either term may be present
- NOT - excludes a term
|
|
Truncation
|
- Use to search variations of a root.
- Cloth* will retrieve clothes, clothing, clothed...
- Often an "*"
- Use a ? in PantherCat.
- Find the correct truncation symbol in the Help area of a
database.

Phrase Searching
|
- Put quotes around phrases such as "dress code"
- "clothing guidelines"
- "employee morale"

Library Resources
- Use the Library Catalog to locate books and documents and to determine
if the library owns the journals.
- Uses Indexes/Databases/Abstracts to locate articles within journals.
Articles may be available full text on-line or in the bound journals on
the shelves.

Abstract:
The workplace is going informal. For certain innovative, high-performance,
high-involvement organizations, a climate of informality is viewed as
central to their culture; proponents claim that such a climate can boost
employee morale, creativity, and even overall performance. That such
informality and behavioral "looseness" are considered so mainstream
to modern organizations is especially intriguing in light of the fact
that this deviates so much from the formality, protocol, and staidness
traditionally associated with business contexts. A paper takes a closer
look at contemporary constructs of informality, seeking to understand
how they may be compatible with traditional preachments regarding propriety
and formality in business contexts. Issues addressed include: 1. casual
dress codes, 2. informality and formality as broad types of social situations,
and 3. informality and organizational innovation. The implications for
managers and for organizational design are discussed.

- From the library's home page at www.uwm.edu/Libraries,
click on Electronic
Journals.
- Use the alphabetical links and locate the title of the journal. (Example:
Look under B for Business Horizons.)
- Follow the link to the database or direct subscription and browse or search
for the article.

How to tell if a copy of a journal/magazine is
located in the UWM Libraries:
- Click on the Library
Catalog on the library's home page www.uwm.edu/Libraries.
- Select Journal/Magazine/Newspaper Title.
- Type the title of the journal (NOT the article!). Example: Type
Business Horizons.
- If the library does not have the journal, a message will display
that "Your search resulted in no hits."
- If the library does have the journal, verify that the library has the
volume and issue you need.
- Write down the call number.
- If you need an issue which is listed in the "Latest
Issues" section, go to the Current
Periodicals room in the Lower Level, West wing of the library and look for
the call number.
- If you need an issue in the "Library Has"
section and the location is Stacks,
determine the correct floor using the first letter of the call number and
the Floor Key (A-L,P 3rd/M-N,Q-R 2nd/S-Z Lower).
If the journal is not located in the Stacks, note the floor and wing of
the location (e.g. Microforms - Microfilm (Lower Level, West).
