Types of Article Databases
Which
article database to use depends upon your topic.
1. General Article Databases
- Is
your topic general or cross-disciplinary?
- Currently
in the news?
If so, start
with one of the general article databases. These cover a wide range
of subjects and often index a mixture of popular and scholarly sources. Some databases may also include trade publications, magazines published for those in a particular trade or industry.
This is often a good place to
begin research. Examples of general databases and the kinds of articles
they identify are:

- 1984-present; indexes over 3,200 scholarly and popular periodicals in the areas of business, social sciences, humanities, general academic, general science, education, and multi-cultural studies. Full text is available for 1,850 journals starting with January 1990.

- 1986-present; Full text of over 550 U.S. and international news sources. Includes coverage of over 150 major U.S. and international newspapers such as New York Times and the Times (London).

- 1983-present; indexes over 360 popular periodicals published in the U.S. and Canada. Includes current events, news, and many other subject areas. Full text is available for most journals starting with January 1994.
