Subject Listing: World War I |
Before the United States entered the "Great War" many Americans voiced
strong opposition to becoming involved in any type of military action. As the
possibility of the United States entering the war became a reality,
civil liberties organizations, such as the Civil Liberties Bureau of the
American Union Against Militarism, began to fear that the constitutional rights
of anti-war Americans would be violated. Hoping to meet the legal needs of these
individuals the organization mailed letters, such as the one above, to solicit various United States lawyers, including
Milwaukee Native Robert Wild, to fight on their behalf.
