Collection consists of letters from Anderson to her sister, Mrs. Philip Palmer, that mention Little Review magazine, her health, and her travels throughout France and Europe. Also includes photographs (1930-1973) of Anderson and her friends, and an 1930 article by Sherwood Anderson on Margaret Anderson's book My Thirty Years' War. The collection includes 163 letters, 66 postcards, 22 photographs, 6 manuscripts consisting of 57 pages, a cablegram telling of Margaret Anderson's death, and two letters from friends after her death. magazineEditorial office files of Arena, a short-lived Irish literary magazine. The bulk of the collection is composed of holograph and typewritten manuscripts published in the magazine. Among the notable contributors were Austin Clarke, Anthony Cronin, Edward Dahlberg, Robert Graves, Brian Higgins, Patrick Kavanagh, Thomas Kinsella, Mary Lavin, James Plunkett, Paul Potts, and C. H. Papers of a Wisconsin Reform rabbi who served at Milwaukee's Temple Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun, documenting his education, publications and speeches, and his role in the establishment of several synagogues and many Jewish organizations and programs. Included is information on the establishment of synagogues in Madison and Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and the establishment of the Milwaukee Round Table of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Jewish Council, the Wisconsin Society for Jewish Learning, the Wisconsin Jewish Archives, and the Department of Hebrew Studies at the University of Wisconsin--Madison. The collection also contains correspondence between Baron and several prominent literary and religious leaders. Some of the materials are in Yiddish, Hebrew, German, French, and Polish. Microfilmed poetry, plays, literary writings, and newspaper articles by and about Bartosz, editor (1937-1954) and editor-in-chief (1954-1973) of the Stevens Point newspaper Gwiazda Polarna. Among the newspaper articles are a series which comprise his 1931 "History of the Polonia Press" in the United States, articles about prominent individuals connected with the Polish Press, and his compilation of Gwiazda Polarna newsclippings (ca. 1968), entitled "60 Years of Gwiazda Polarna, Stevens Point and 105 Years of Polish Press in America." There is also a run of Bartosz's weekly column in the Gwiazda Polarna (1938-1940, 1959-1970). Most of the materials are in Polish. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers, primarily consisting of scripts and programs from plays, of a Milwaukee Polish American educator and writer. While teaching at Milwaukee high schools, Bolan formed several student Polish clubs, for which he wrote and selected Polish-language plays for presentation; several of the original scripts are in the collection. Also included is a scrapbook of clippings from Polish language newspapers regarding his teaching career in Milwaukee, the activities of the Polish clubs in the Milwaukee area, and reviews of the plays. In addition, there are two hand- painted letters of appreciation for clothing sent to Polish school children by the American Red Cross during World War II, miscellaneous Polish travel brochures and literature from the 1930s, and a poster. Papers of a University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee English professor which include professional and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, drafts of published works, copies of works that had been submitted for publication, reviews, and notes. The professional correspondence includes thank you letters, letters of inquiry, rejection and acceptance letters from publishers, and routine correspondence with colleagues. The personal correspondence deals primarily with Burke's battle against heart disease. A large portion of the collection focuses on Burke's involvement with professional organizations, particularly the National Council of Teachers of English and the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English. The collection also reflects her interest in black literature. She taught courses in black literature, and she served on the advisory board for the Negro American Literature Forum, which later became the Black American Literature Forum. The collection consists of materials of a University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM) English Professor's research on Howard Fast, a prolific communist author. The significant areas of the collection focus on Howard Fast's political involvement with the Communist Party (1943-1956) and the Anti-Fascist movement (1945-1950). The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, oral history interviews, poems, political flyers and pamphlets, and a subpoena to appear before the United States Senate. Included is correspondence with Bette Fast, Steve Nelson, Albert Maltz, Morton Sobell, Boris Izakov, Boris Polevoy, and various literary publishers. Finding aid available in the Archives.

flyerCollection contains the editorial files of Little Review, an international magazine of the arts. The bulk of the collection consists of authorial files, which include corrected and uncorrected galleys of works; correspondence, holograph manuscripts, and typescripts. The collection also contains the administrative files of editors Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. The administrative files include correspondence concerning subscriptions and advertising; letters from Ezra Pound; and letters from John Quinn, a financial backer of the magazine and the publication's lawyer in the case concerning the government's seizure of the issue containing James Joyce's Ulysses. The collection also contains a small amount of layout materials for various issues and photographs, usually published in the magazine. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Records of the Society, officially organized in 1948 to promote the advancement of scholarship on John Milton and his works. A nearly complete sequence of annual dinner and meeting programs, as well as the Milton Evening booklets which preceded them, document the society's main function, which was to bring together and honor scholars in the field. The correspondence primarily relates to the planning of the dinner and the gathering of Milton-related works for the society's library. The annual James Holly Hanford Award for best book and for best article related to Milton is an ongoing function of the society for which it receives submissions. The collection also includes the "Seventeenth Century News," the official organ of the Milton Society of American, from 1942-1988 with only occasional missing issues. This publication highlights recent Milton scholarship and also includes "The Neo-Latin News" beginning in 1954. Finding aid available in the Archives.

White, presidents of the board of trustees (1896-1962); business and financial records of the business office (1888-1964); subject files of the dean of students, including reports from student organizations and activities, and minutes of committees (1911-1964).
Also contains the registrar's subject files, including student grade transcripts (1904-1964); subject files and correspondence of the faculty, including course outlines (1878-1964); records of student organizations and copies of the student's literary magazine Kodak, annual Cumtux, newspapers Snapshot and Dial, and photograph albums (1895-1964); records of the Alumnae Association (1887-1964); subject files of the public relations office (1900-1964); history files, including catalogs and bulletins, newspaper clippings, and some records of the predecessor institutions (1852-1964); and a photograph collection (1850-1962). Records of the Polish Fine Arts Club, founded in Milwaukee in 1930 by Conrad Saskowski and others, as a means of disseminating Polish culture by performing and sponsoring serious and comic plays, concerts, and operas. Included in the collection are minutes of meetings, 1930-1933; correspondence; fragmentary financial records, with a few box office statements; membership records; and programs, some script materials, news clippings, and photographs from performances. Among the photographs are characters from Halka, Masked Ball, and Martha, presented by the Polish Opera Club, 1921-1927. Finding aid available in the Archives.
Robert Burns Club of Milwaukee.

Records of a non-profit social and literary club dedicated to preserving the living memory of the 18th century Scottish poet and songwriter Robert Burns. In addition to its monthly gatherings where members met to discuss the poet's life and works, the club engaged in a variety of social activities. It hosted an annual supper celebrating the poet's birthday, participated in the annual Milwaukee Highland Games, and conducted seminars on the cooking of haggis, a traditional Scottish dish. In 1992 the club published a collection of essays, songs, and poems titled Mither Wit and Native Fire: The Genius of Robert Burns. In 1994 the club hosted the General Meeting of the North American Association of Federated Burnsians (NAAFB) at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. That same year, the club was involved in renovating the Robert Burns Monument at Burns Commons, Knapp Street and Prospect Avenue, Milwaukee. The collection documents all of these activities. Records include meeting minutes, monthly newsletters, correspondence, photographs, song books, and newspaper clippings. The collection also contains an incomplete run of two periodicals published by the Robert Burns World Federation: the Burns Chronicle and The Burnsian. Finding aid available in the Archives.

The collection contains the personal papers of Maurice Sarfaty, a Greek immigrant whose family came to the United States in the 1950's. Sarfaty was an avid writer and self-published author of both fantasy fiction and gothic horror stories. Records consist of the administrative files of the Society, which supported public interest in the arts. Includes minutes of the Board of Directors meetings (1939-1991) and treasurer's reports (1941-1991), the Society's annual art exhibition (1942-1982), minutes of annual meetings (1941-1990), annual reports of the various interest groups, and extensive minutes of the Painters' Group meetings (1938-1954, 1983-1991). Files contain Society's monthly newsletter (1952-1991) and the administrative materials and news clippings pertaining to the Piano Talenteens competition. There are membership rosters (1942-1990), officers' reports and scrapbooks of news clippings and administrative items. One folder contains materials on the Wisconsin Composers Program (1959-1982), a biennial event which featured the music of Wisconsin composers. Szymczak, Chester J.

Papers of a Polish American author and journalist. Szymczak was born and raised in Milwaukee, served as a signalman in World War II, survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Dorchester, and served as a newspaper editor in suburban Milwaukee during the 1950s. Among Szymczak's published works are an account of the Dorchester sinking, a biography of astronomer Nicolas Copernicus, and many studies of American literature. Besides a small file of correspondence, the collection consists entirely of manuscripts and notes for published and unpublished works, including non-fiction, short stories, poetry, and plays. The collection primarily documents the development of the Center's seminars, conferences, and lecture series, and the invitation of scholars, authors, and artists, such as Thomas J. Abercrombie, Celia Bertin, Anthony Burgess, and June Wayne. The collection consists of correspondence between the director and scholars, authors, and artists about lectures and conferences sponsored by the Center; brochures and announcements of Center events; photographs; committee meeting minutes; transcripts of lectures delivered at conferences; and the Center's Newsletter. Much of the collection documents the role and scholarship of women in the arts in the twentieth century. Working Papers, a series of works-in-progress published by the Center, documents the research and pre-publication of scholarship by the Center's fellows. Approximately one-quarter of the correspondence is in French, most dealing with "A Week with French Women" and other lectures and visits given by foreign artists and authors. The correspondence file (1956-1976) contains correspondence between the department chairman and the dean of the College of Letters & Science, largely documenting course and curriculum developments. A large share of the correspondence and related proposals found in the file concern the development of an undergraduate major in Greek. Other correspondence documents the budget and staffing. Collection documents much of the routine administrative operations of the Dept. of English mainly from 1959 to 1979. Included are various committee files and on-campus correspondence documenting curriculum planning, staffing and budgeting. Correspondence is largely on-campus. The collection contains subject files dealing with the Cheshire Literary Magazine and a 1960 radio series entitled "The Poet Views the World." Also includes records of Project Destiny, a 1960s program which introduced impoverished public school students to a university setting. Also included are a series of reel-to-reel tapes which document the Milton Tercentenary Conference of 1974, held on the 300th anniversary of the poet's death to commemorate his works. Pre-1956 records were created by the English department chair of the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee, and concern the merger with the University of Wisconsin Extension and routine administrative affairs. The majority of the correspondence is between the department chairman and the Dean of the College of Letters & Science, the Associate Dean of Humanities, and the Chairman of the Dept. of English. The collection also contains departmental meeting minutes (1968-1992), documenting appointments, scheduling of classes, enrollment, budget, and miscellaneous announcements and administrative matters of concern. Other materials in the collection include degree proposals, minutes of the executive committee, and minutes of the Committee on Comparative Literature Program, which largely concern course developments and staffing.
