- A memoir by Lucy Rothstein Baras of Sheboygan, Wisconsin about her experiences living in a
Jewish settlement in eastern Poland during World War II. Written in novelistic form, Baras
describes Jewish life and culture in the village of Skalat; the invasion of first the Red Army in
1939 and then the Germans; conditions under the occupation; her parents, home, and work;
pogroms and other brutality suffered at the hands of the Germans and Ukranians; conditions in a
labor camp near the village and her work as a seamstress for the family of a high-ranking German
army official; hiding out in the forest for several months at the end of the war; and finally,
liberation by the Soviet Army. There is a brief postscript which describes the fate of various family
members and friends. Restricted: Copyright is owned by Lucy Baras until January 1, 2005.

- Collection includes correspondence, speeches, and scrapbooks relating to Broughton's
editorship
of the Sheboygan Press and wide ranging professional and social activities. Most of the
materials pertain to Broughton's other activities as member of the Wisconsin Democratic party,
philanthropist, anti-prohibitionist, fund raiser, conservationist, champion of the Wisconsin cheese
industry, and patron of state and local history. Some of the correspondence deals with the
management of the newspaper. Due to his newspaper work and broad range of activities,
Broughton exchanged letters with many people of state and national importance. Also of interest in the collection is a significant volume of correspondence from a number
of servicemen during World War II, sent to Broughton for inclusion in the newspaper. The
correspondents served in all branches of the armed forces, and ranged in rank from private to
colonel. The letters, found in Broughton's chronological correspondence file, collectively give a
varied perspective on the war as seen by the fighting man. Of particular interest for their level of
detail are the letters of Thomas Herbert Thomas, who served in Italy and North Africa. Finding aid available in the Archives.

marriage, membership, probation, and other records. Some of the records, especially those from

- Treasurer's journal of receipts and disbursements, showing source, amount, order
number, payee,
and reason for payment. Entries are generally dated only with a year, and are arranged
chronologically. Entries after 1905 were apparently made wherever a blank page was available,
and are thus found entirely out of chronological order.
- Kiel, Roland H.
- Memoir, 1984-1995.
- Milwaukee Small Collection 191
- Two editions of an illustrated memoir written between 1984 and 1995 by Roland
Kiel, a native of Sheboygan, Wis., describing his military service during World War I. Kiel served
as a staff sergeant with the Headquarters Squadron of the 47th Air Depot Group, U.S. Army Air
Forces, stationed at the Eastern India Air Depot, Panagarh, India. Although very similar, each
edition contains material that the other does not. They describe induction, training, transport to
India, the depot and Army life in India, and the return home. Kiel also describes travel outside the
base; included is a letter written by his best friend, Willie Comfort, describing their visit to a leper
colony. The memoir is illustrated throughout with photographs, drawings, and maps,
and includes several documents related to his service.

- Four diaries of a farmer-painter who emigrated from Schleswig-Holstein to Sheboygan.
The
diaries, which are written in old German script, are supplemented by complete translations of the
first volume (1848-1850) into modern German and into English and by notes on the other three
volumes. Although the diaries reveal little about family life, they extensively discuss his journey
to Wisconsin via New York City and the Erie Canal, the process of homesteading in the
wilderness, economic conditions (especially during the Civil War), and ethnic assimilation and
community life. Because Kroehnke was a relatively well educated man his diaries are also of
note for linguists and paleographers. Finding aid available in

- A record of taxes on real and personal property, including
name of owner, description of property, number of acres, valuation of property,
taxes assessed, and allocation of taxes to the state, county, town, school
district, highway commission, and other special funds. The tax rolls were
compiled annually until 1900 and every five years thereafter. Volumes for the

- Record book containing lists of church members, officers, and records of baptisms and
marriages, partly written in Norwegian.
- Miller, Mary Abbott.
- Letters, 1855-1907.
- Milwaukee Manuscript Collection 170
- Letters primarily exchanged between long-time Sheboygan County, Wisconsin residents Rev.
Alonzo T. Miller and his wife, Mary Abbott Miller. The letters span their courtship and
marriage in 1860, Alonzo's (1864-1865) Civil War service in Company B of the 27th Wisconsin
Infantry, and periodic separations due to familial or ministerial obligations in later years.
There are some letters to Mary from her parents, Civil War letters (1862-1865) from brother
Martin Abbott (Company G of the 26th Wisconsin Infantry), and from a few friends and other
relatives. A few letters were written by Alonzo to his parents in 1865. Remaining letters are
from the Millers' four children and occasionally from one of their grandchildren. Miscellaneous
materials include handwritten poems, religious items, and a small book, The Christian
Minister's Affectionate Advice to a Married Couple, which includes their marriage
certificate and an inscription to Reverend Irwin who married them. A 1910 news article provide
biographical information. Martin Abbott's letters were written from various camps and
battlefields including Camp Sigel (Milwaukee) and discuss his involvement in several important
battles, including Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and Atlanta. Enlisting towards the end of the
war, Alonzo's frequent letters were written from Camp Randall, Little Rock, Arkansas, and
several camps in Alabama and Texas. Primarily discussing his religious state of mind, Alonzo's
letters also discuss camp life and his involvement in the Alabama battles at Fort Blakely and
Mobile. Box 2 contains oversize letters. Finding aid

(1871-1914); school census, receipts, and disbursements (1850-1861); and apportionment of school
fund income and county school tax (1862-1891).

- The collection consists of John P. Otis' photographs and compiled histories of about 5,000
Wisconsin churches and a few synagogues, acquired over a twenty-year period. The photographs
usually consist of a single 3" x 3" color exterior image of the building, kept in twenty albums.
The photographs are indexed by "history" cards, arranged by locality. The collection includes
four boxes of negatives, in no apparent order; and seventy-two maps showing the routes Otis
travelled and the location of many of the churches he photographed.
Otis compiled the history of the churches through a standard form which requested the year
the
church was founded, the first pastor, and denomination or sect. A number of the respondents
provided additional historical information. The forms are maintained in files, arranged by
locality and/or county, which also contain published histories of the churches, and
newsclippings. The collection includes Otis' correspondence (1968-1979) concerning the
acquisition of materials; the development of the project; miscellaneous faith and denomination
histories; newsclippings; solicitation of funds; and efforts to donate the collection. Finding aid available in the Archives.

consisting of
subject files and files on problems of individual constituents. The subject files contain
correspondence from constituents, colleagues, advocacy groups, and staff members; speeches
and statements; policy papers and reports; minutes; and clippings. The subject files relate to
issues such as education, nursing homes, taxes, and committees on which Otte served, including
the Senate Transportation Committee, the Migrant Labor Council, and the Legislative Council's

- Political papers of Calvin Potter, a member of the Democratic Party, mainly reflecting his
years as a representative of Wisconsin's 9th Senate District (Sheboygan, Calumet, and Manitowoc
counties) from 1990-1998, but also including materials from his tenure in the State Assembly
(59th District, Sheboygan County) from 1974-1988. The papers consist of biographical information, newsletters, press releases, speeches, and subject file which focus on legislation with which he was closely involved. Topics include credit unions, school mascots and Native American stereotypes, juvenile justice, "light" butter, pornography, DNA testing, tattoo legislation, and various police related issues, among others. The collection also contains a diary and correspondence from a 1986 trip to Japan funded through the Japan/United States Friendship Commission to study the Japanese educational system. summary of proceedings, including a copy of the last will and testament; executor's bond; orders
for appraisal and disposal of property, appointment of executor, and limiting time for creditors to
make claims; and various affidavits and petitions. The record of claims (1882-1915) provides
the name of person being claimed against, date and amount of claim, and the person making the
claim; an index is at the front of the volume and on pp. 400-413. The series also contains a
volume of final judgments of probate (1899-1928) arranged by date. A volume recording taxes
on legacies (1903-1906) is arranged by date the petition was filed, and provides place and date of
death, estimated value of property, date and amount of the inventory of property; heirs at large,
