Include files on Immanuel Baptist Church, Roger Williams Hospital; his political campaigns; his secretaryship to Mayor Hoan of Milwaukee; opposition to war and fascism; and support of Milwaukee's blacks. Scrapbook, photographs, and miscellaneous materials pertaining to Janik's activities with the Wisconsin Tavern Keepers Association and the South Side Business Men's Club; his two taverns, Balcony Inn and Club Rogers; and his political activities. Noteworthy among the photographs are a 1932 picture of Janik's tavern showing customers drinking "moonshine" during Prohibition, and a 1941 picture of the grand opening of the Club Rogers. A float plane in San Diego, 1912 (22193 bytes)Papers of the first Polish American aviator and the first licensed pilot in Wisconsin, a stunt flyer whose career spanned from 1912-1919, and who was grounded by deteriorating eyesight. Includes correspondence and contracts with the Curtiss Exhibition Company, for whom Kaminski worked, concerning exhibition flights; and broadsides, newsclippings, and numerous photographs and newsclippings documenting his flights. The photographs are mostly of Kaminski and his Curtiss Model D pusher aircraft "Sweetheart," taken between 1912-1914 at public exhibitions or flight training schools.

Includes some photos of Kaminski's crashes at Tomahawk, Wisconsin on 4 July 1914 and at the Milwaukee Yacht Club in June 1915; and of his aircraft and fellow pilots in the 7th Aero Squadron stationed in Panama during World War I. Collection also contains correspondence, newsclippings, and interviews concerning Kaminski's participation in events marking the fiftieth anniversary of powered flight in 1953.  Finding aid available in the Archives.

An undated photograph of puppies in a basket (17118 bytes) Kwasniewski was a photographer who worked in Milwaukee's Polish American community (Polonia). Most of the pictures were created by Kwasniewski at his Park Studio in Milwaukee. Many of the photographic images depict family events such as anniversaries, first communions, funerals, graduations, and weddings. Other images include scenes of accidents; fires; floods; fraternal organizations; homes; construction scenes; individual businesses, including Kuryer Polski; political parties; ceremonies such as church anniversaries, ordinations, and dedications; and social events such as New Year's Eve celebrations and "Hard Times" parties that were popular in the 1920s. The result is a striking picture of Milwaukee Polish Americans and their contributions to the city in which they lived. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Report to the Wisconsin Electric Railway Historical Society, Inc. detailing the condition of the railroad overhead from the interchange at Mukwonago to Highway 20 at East Troy, Wisconsin, including a written description, detailed nomenclature and overhead defect drawings, and color photographs. The Municipality of East Troy Railroad is the last remnant of the Milwaukee Electric Railway Company line. Lind conducted this survey as a volunteer for the East Troy Trolley Museum which leased the railroad in 1979.

Collection contains the editorial files of Little Review, an international magazine of the arts. The bulk of the collection consists of authorial files, which include corrected and uncorrected galleys of works; correspondence, holograph manuscripts, and typescripts. The collection also contains the administrative files of editors Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. The administrative files include correspondence concerning subscriptions and advertising; letters from Ezra Pound; and letters from John Quinn, a financial backer of the magazine and the publication's lawyer in the case concerning the government's seizure of the issue containing James Joyce's Ulysses. The collection also contains a small amount of layout materials for various issues and photographs, usually published in the magazine. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers of a Milwaukee woman artist which include correspondence with friends and artists discussing her personal life and views on art (1937-1980). In particular, she had continued correspondence with Morino Hiroaki and a prominent Tokyo landscape designer, Shimoyama Shigemaro. Also included are programs of her art exhibitions (1926-1980), photographs of art work and personal life (undated), and a scrapbook that documents the recognition she received in newspapers (1925-1962). Includes brief narrative histories of a wide variety of Milwaukee industries; maps; photographs; a bibliography; and an index.

Records collected by Miller, former president of the Village of Greendale, concerning the village's development as one of three Greenbelt towns constructed by the U. S. Resettlement Administration. Included are plans of the town, histories of its planning, photocopy of a scrapbook of news clippings and press releases, pamphlets advertising the town, and community newsletters. Videotape copies of motion picture footage shot by Eugene Millmann of events in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as a few other locations, mostly dating from the 1920s-1930s. The collection contains twenty-six separate clips, including the 1927 Milwaukee parades for aviators Charles Lindbergh and Lester Maitland, the Washington Park Zoo, Milwaukee's 75th and 100th anniversary parades, the 1951 visit of Douglas MacArthur, and the Muirdale Sanitorium. The footage totals 77 minutes in length, is in both black and white and color, and contains no sound. The footage was originally on 16 mm film. Finding aid available in the Archives.

The collection contains some records of the College's predecessor institutions, the Milwaukee College and Downer College, but most materials date from after 1895. Includes president's correspondence with benefactors, faculty members, students, and others (1895-1964); reports from departments; subject files and correspondence of W. W. Wight and E. E. White, presidents of the board of trustees (1896-1962); business and financial records of the business office (1888-1964); subject files of the dean of students, including reports from student organizations and activities, and minutes of committees (1911-1964).
Also contains the registrar's subject files, including student grade transcripts (1904-1964); subject files and correspondence of the faculty, including course outlines (1878-1964); records of student organizations and copies of the student's literary magazine Kodak, annual Cumtux, newspapers Snapshot and Dial, and photograph albums (1895-1964); records of the Alumnae Association (1887-1964); subject files of the public relations office (1900-1964); history files, including catalogs and bulletins, newspaper clippings, and some records of the predecessor institutions (1852-1964); and a photograph collection (1850-1962). Also contains some correspondence between Increase Lapham and Catherine Beecher on their educational philosophy.

Milwaukee Electric Railway and Transport Company.

Records of the company and its predecessors, documenting the technological evolution of the Milwaukee traction industry, and legal and financial development of the railway companies. A large portion of the collection dates between 1920-1940 when the company undertook its most ambitious modernization and expansion programs, and experienced its most severe hardships. The records contain little information pertaining to labor relations.

Collection documents the rolling stock department's concerns with railway equipment, accidents, labor, and construction programs. Includes corporate histories, correspondence, financial data, minutes, and reports. Numerous blueprints detail interurban routes and new equipment for installation in trolley cars and buses. Also includes albums (1924-1942) containing portrait photographs and biographical information on the Veterans' Association of the company; and cartographic records (ca. 1898-1963) consisting of charts, maps, and plans of buildings, construction projects, equipment, and operations.

Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.

There are restrictions on access to the collection; consult an archivist for details. Records of a professional repertory company begun as a community theater. The records document the problems that beset a local theater while building an audience, maintaining good relations with the community, achieving financial solvency, and attaining administrative and artistic stability. The bulk of the materials is arranged chronologically by season, beginning in 1953-1954, which followed the fiscal year. The records of individual performances are limited to financial records, programs, reviews, scripts, and photographs. The records from 1969-1978 consist mostly of technical information relating to productions at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in Milwaukee, and at a smaller experimental theater at Court Street, as well as special productions performed at festivals or on tour. There is also information on the MRT's move from the Fred Miller Theatre to the Todd Wehr Theatre in the PAC during the 1969-1970 season. Also present are similar records for the Fred Miller Theatre League, a women's support group; and the company's School of Professional Arts. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Administrative files, primarily from the tenure of executive director Wesley L. Scott (1959-1981), including minutes of the board of directors and executive committee; annual reports; newsletters; membership files; committee records; and correspondence with related local and state organizations. General reference material deals with Milwaukee minority opportunities, civil rights, and other topics. Records of the various League departments illustrate the different projects undertaken in the League's major program areas. Also contains files on the National Urban League, and copies of reports sent to the national office. On microfilm are minutes of the board of directors meetings, newsclippings, and photographs illustrating community events (1957-1958). Finding aid available in the Archives.

Sixty-three images taken by Milwaukee, Wisconsin photographer James Murdoch, most dating from the 1930s. Eighteen photos are of gas stations in Michigan and Wisconsin owned by the Wadham Oil Company. Sixteen of the photos are exterior shots of residences commissioned by the Holland Furnace Company for using their product. The remaining images document a variety of Milwaukee-area companies. New Home Club (Milwaukee, Wis.)

The collection consists largely of administrative records of the Club, dating mostly from the 1950s to 1970s. The records document the Club's efforts to remain financially solvent, develop membership, and arrange social activities. The collection contains assorted financial records; records concerning the Club's anniversaries (1947-1987), including a few photographs taken at the events, and a videotape of the 13 September 1987 celebration; membership lists (1937-1987); records of the annual meetings (1951-1952, 1967-1985); and the meetings of the board of directors (1963-1985). The correspondence files of the Club's presidents (1950-1987) usually deal with financial and membership matters.

The collection also includes flyers advertising the Club's activities (1949-1987); a 1946 history of the group; newsclippings (1952-1979); a small amount of correspondence regarding Seder Night (1953-1979); and a file concerning the group's dissolution (1985-1987). The only record from the World War II era is a membership list; nothing exists documenting the efforts to assist Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. Only passing mention can be found concerning the relief fund for Jews in Austria and Germany after the war. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Otis, John P.
Church histories collection, 1967-[ongoing]

The collection consists of John P. Otis' photographs and compiled histories of about 5,000 Wisconsin churches and a few synagogues, acquired over a twenty-year period. The photographs usually consist of a single 3" x 3" color exterior image of the building, kept in twenty albums. The photographs are indexed by "history" cards, arranged by locality. The collection includes four boxes of negatives, in no apparent order; and seventy-two maps showing the routes Otis travelled and the location of many of the churches he photographed.

Otis compiled the history of the churches through a standard form which requested the year the church was founded, the first pastor, and denomination or sect. A number of the respondents provided additional historical information. The forms are maintained in files, arranged by locality and/or county, which also contain published histories of the churches, and newsclippings. The collection includes Otis' correspondence (1968-1979) concerning the acquisition of materials; the development of the project; miscellaneous faith and denomination histories; newsclippings; solicitation of funds; and efforts to donate the collection. The collection consists of John P. Otis' photographs of Wisconsin cities, lighthouses and covered bridges. Photographs of Wisconsin cities include buildings and landscapes; the Milwaukee area is heavily represented. Included in the Milwaukee photographs are festivals, downtown buildings and panoramic views.
