Miscellaneous records, mostly dating 1956-1958, of an organization which promoted the memory and music of Juan Christomo de Arriaga, an early 19th century Spanish composer. Includes the correspondence of the Society's president, Alan Pedigo, with fellow Arriaga enthusiasts, newsclippings, programs from concerts of Arriaga's music, and a 1906 photograph of the laying of the cornerstone at the Arriaga Memorial. Photographs and photocopied newsclippings documenting the career of a Polish-American politician, who was a West Allis alderman (1936-1956), and Milwaukee County sheriff and treasurer (1956-1974). The photos of Barczak were taken while he was alderman, and receiving awards later in his life. The clippings illustrate Barczak's 1937, 1952, and 1956 electoral victories; a 1954 raid on a stag party; his participation in county and national Democratic Party politics; and his 1965 selection as Man of the Year by Lodge 2159 of the Polish National Alliance. Newell and Marion Conant were active members of the Seven Arts Society for many years; he was involved in the photography and music groups, she in the painters group. These slides document Society groups and activities in which the Conants were involved. Each slide identifies the event, year, and people pictured as recorded by Newell Conant. Contains detailed correspondence between Judson A. Roundy and Joshua L. Dexter concerning family matters and the establishment of their Shelbyville, Illinois grocery business in 1851 and Milwaukee grocery business in 1872; letters and diaries of Joshua's son Charles J. concerning his education, early life, 1879 move to Milwaukee, and business career; correspondence and brief diaries of Charles' son Edward; and a 1908 European travel diary and correspondence of Charles' wife Effie McBeth Dexter. Also contains the articles of incorporation, examples of advertising, and circular letters of the grocery firm (which has undergone numerous name changes). Collection includes family photographs, genealogical material, and miscellaneous correspondence of the extended family. All of the diaries are available on microfilm. The collection is largely made up of photographs depicting the "human chess games," organized by Meyer Fishman after his release from the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, which entertained fellow Holocaust survivors awaiting resettlement. Other photographs are of Meyers' Food Bulk Store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also contains negatives of all the prints found in the collection. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Pictures taken by Edwin Flancher of the Gruettner family of Milwaukee at their home and at their cabin at Lake Manitowish, Villas County, Wisconsin. The family is pictured in various leisure activities: fishing, hunting, swimming and preparing and eating meals. Photographs of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin social organization. There are portraits of the eleven men who were credited as being the "Builders of Kenwood Temple," and six photographs of the initial construction of the Temple. There is one group photograph of the members who attended an organizational meeting at Thomson's Drug Store on 25 March 1913. Personal and professional papers of various members of the French and Quarles families of Milwaukee, and the the Thiers family of Kenosha, Wisconsin successively collected by matriarch Louisa K. Thiers, daughter Emma Quarles, and granddaughter Ethel French. Correspondence and family memorabilia comprise the collection's bulk and document the family life and activities of these socially prominent, well-educated Milwaukee and Kenosha families.Spanning five generations, the collection includes personal and family correspondence; diaries, European trip and fishing journals; photographs; genealogical materials and notes on the Capron, Mann, Thiers, Quarles, and French families; scrapbooks; lecture notes and other educational materials and memorabilia; reminiscences; materials of various fraternal, civic, and professional organizations; and other papers. Correspondence, patent applications, patents, sketches and notes, and legal records of Louis Osborne French, patent attorney and inventor, are present. Newsclippings about and tributes to Louisa K. Thiers (1814-1926), credited as the oldest person to have lived in Wisconsin and the last true daughter of an American Revolutionary War Soldier, also are included. The Samuel W. French files include information on the Freemasons. The Cyril Maurice Owen files include information on the Arion Musical Club in Milwaukee.The photographs comprise numerous family photos in various settings including many images of vacationing and fishing in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Glazewski family.

Papers of Mary Glazewski, her husband Carl, and other family members. Contains newsclippings and programs by several Milwaukee Polish-American drama and cultural organizations, including the Marshal Pilsudski Club, the Mazur Polish Dancers, and photographs with Alfred J. Sokolnicki, author of many of the plays performed; and a diary (1896-1945) written in Polish by Mary's father, John Pszybylski. Also contains poetry written in Polish by Mary's aunt, Kate Jakubowicz, recording her personal experiences, views of Milwaukee, and patriotic themes. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Golda Meir collection, 1904-1987.

Collection largely consists of reproduced correspondence, press releases, photographs, and speeches pertaining to Golda Meir's political life, primarily from 1955-74. The correspondence is usually with friends and admirers, thanking Meir and communicating their support for her. There are two folders of photocopied materials originally created by Ms. Lou Kadar, Meir's secretary, containing supportive letters to Meir and recollections of her life. Contains newsclippings, many in Hebrew, from the Jerusalem Post (1957-1983), and the Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle (1973-1974) and numerous other papers (1947-1984) about Meir. The photographs are of Meir throughout her life; historic Jewish individuals; and the Milwaukee Jewish community. Also contains oral history interviews with persons who knew Meir, including Yitzhak Rabin and Lou Kadar. Most of the interviewees did not sign release forms, so they remain the holders of copyright. Grand Avenue Congregational Church (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Records, 1857-1977.

Milwaukee Manuscript Collection 128

Records (mainly 1910-1965) of a Milwaukee church founded in 1847 as the Free Congregational Church, and later known as the Spring Street Congregational Church, and renamed the Grand Avenue Congregational Church in 1881. Included are published histories and information on anniversary observances; newspaper clippings and photographs; minutes and correspondence of congregational meetings, the church council, and many governing boards and committees; and financial and other administrative records.

Also contains incomplete membership records; and numerous publications including annual reports, newsletters, and church bulletins. Activities of the women in the congregation are documented by minutes, financial information, and other records of the Women's Guild and its many circles, the Home and Foreign Missionary Societies, and other groups. There is information on the 1961 United Church of Christ merger and on participation in area ecumenical activities. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers, largely correspondence, of a Roman Catholic priest and prominent Milwaukee civil rights activist. Most of the correspondence is unsolicited responses to Father Groppi's 1967-1968 civil rights activities, making the collection more useful for research on public attitudes towards civil rights than for a study of Groppi's life and work. Also contains an unfinished manuscript of an autobiography; legal materials which offer more information about his civil rights activities than any other file in the collection; scrapbooks; newsclippings; and two recordings of speeches concerning the role of the church in racial and social issues.
