UWM Manuscript Collection 7

Miscellaneous records, mostly dating 1956-1958, of an organization which promoted the memory and music of Juan Christomo de Arriaga, an early 19th century Spanish composer. Includes the correspondence of the Society's president, Alan Pedigo, with fellow Arriaga enthusiasts, newsclippings, programs from concerts of Arriaga's music, and a 1906 photograph of the laying of the cornerstone at the Arriaga Memorial. Includes a fragment from the 1820 score of Los Esclavos Felices, and a page from an unidentified original score.

Milwaukee Small Collection 118
Papers of a Polish-born musician and conductor who came to the United States in 1932 and settled in Milwaukee. Following a career that included positions as professor, music director, musician, and conductor with orchestras and schools throughout Europe and the United States, Bojanowski was associated with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and other Milwaukee music groups. The collection includes two newspaper clippings, biographical sketch, two programs, and a listing of awards, all regarding Bojanowski. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers of a Milwaukee electrician primarily concerned with his avocation of singing and with his performances in operatic productions. Included are his files of memorabilia from his singing engagements: programs, handbills, and newspaper reviews, advertisements, and clippings, together with several music scores of Polish folk songs in arrangements which Budziszewski commissioned and performed in open-air concerts. This collection of composer John Downey's papers mainly consists of clippings (1949-2001), correspondence (1951-2000), programs (1947-2001), and original scores (1944-2000), documenting Downey's musical career. The collection also includes biographical information and program/music notes, lists of Downey's works, and some miscellaneous materials.

This is the loose-leaf journal kept by Howard R. Dunham during his trip across the United States with the Milwaukee State Teachers College singing group in the summer of 1932. The collection also includes photographs and negatives relating to the trip. Other items in the collection include one photograph dated 1930 and another dated 1935. Materials from three oral history projects, relating to Cuca Records, Paramount Records, and the Park People, conducted by Sarah Filzen. The collection consists of taped interviews and transcripts for the Cuca Records and Paramount Records interviews and abstracts for the Park People interviews.
The oral history projects relating to Cuca Records and Paramount Records, in which interviewees were asked about their background and their knowledge of the history of these local Wisconsin record labels, were conducted while Filzen was a graduate student in history at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee. Filzen’s history of Paramount Records is also included in the collection.
The Park People project studied changes in public policy and recreational needs in the Milwaukee County Park System. Diane Buck co-conducted several of the Park People interviews. Finding aid available in the Archives. 

Fine Arts Quartet.
Records, 1910-1989.

UWM Manuscript Collection 30

Records (mainly 1940-80) of a fine arts quartet documenting its concerts and management, and also containing personal papers of its leader, Leonard Sorkin. The general records of the quartet include reviews of FAQ concerts and feature stories on the FAQ and its members (1948-81); and programs of FAQ concerts and promotional materials (1940-86) which thoroughly document the locales of concerts and choices of music. The FAQ's management and financial records (1945-89) document the financial and management history of the quartet, including activities with recording companies, as well as Leonard Sorkin's role as leader of the group. Also contains the personal papers of Leonard Sorkin, including two scrapbooks (1930-44) and soloist programs (1930-84) concerning his life before he formed the quartet and also recount some of the events that led to the founding of the group. They also document the contacts he made with other musicians before and during World War II.

Undated script in Polish of "Skalmierzanki," a operetta of the women of Skalmierz village, by dramatist Jan Nepomucen Kaminski (1777-1855). Musical score for the operetta was written by Karol Kurpinski (1785-1857), a prominent composer of Polish operettas and musicals. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Kingston Trio.

This collection consists of the records related to the Kingston Trio and founding member and group leader Dave Guard. It documents the history of one of the most popular and influential music groups in American history. Beginning in the spring of 1957, the Kingston Trio launched a career into popular music that would top the charts for over the next several years with dozens of top selling records and number one hits. This collection documents the rise and continued success of the Kingston Trio with news articles, promotional materials, photographs, ephemera, and a series of interview transcripts with group members and associates.

Koelling, Eloise.

Collection of former UWM music professor and composer Eloise Koelling who spent the majority of her career at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (1947-1969). The collection includes various musical scores, primarily suites, sonatas, and concertos for orchestra, as well as children's music, which Koelling composed between 1954 and 1969. The collection also contains scrapbooks (1956-1985), consisting of letters to Koelling, mainly from other UWM professors and composers; concert programs, containing many of her compositions; newspaper clippings describing Koelling's career along with awards she received for her work; and miscellaneous correspondence. Krolasik, Casimir, 1913- .

Papers and other materials collected by Casimir Krolasik, a Milwaukee tool and die maker and musician. Included are records of several organizations with which Krolasik and his wife Marie (nee Pisarzewicz) were active. The collection includes a photograph (1917), 25th anniversary brochure with a history (1932), and newsclippings (1939), of the Polish Young People's Alliance (Towarzystwa Zwiazku Mlodziezy Polskiej), active in Milwaukee from 1907 until its dissolution during World War II. Krolasik participated in the Alliance from 1932 to 1942. Other papers include a 1934 newspaper article picturing Krolasik and Regina Jasinski in dance costumes; a program from the 1975 White House Conference on Domestic and Economic Affairs, held in Milwaukee and attended by Krolasik; a photograph of Krolasik with other members of the Alliance College 37th Pre-Convention Committee (1975); a 1980 issue of Romien, the Polish National Alliance Youth Leaders Magazine; and an undated essay on Mitchell Street in Milwaukee written by Casimir's brother, Roman. During the 1930s, Krolasik performed with two bands, the Kazimierz Krolasik Orchestra, organized in 1933, and its successor, Stanley and the Original Revelers, reorganized by Stanley Nowicki about 1937. Regarding the bands are a 1938 photograph of the Original Revelers, and a 1981 tape recording of Krolasik performing accordian selections in the style of the band. Some of the selections are Krolasik's compositions.

Papers and photographs of a long-time Milwaukee church organist and music director, and organizer of the Milwaukee Polish Opera Club (1920-1928), the first such group in the United States to present in its entirety the Polish national opera, Halka. Landowski served as organist and choir director at St. Vincent de Paul's and St. Hyacinth's Churches from 1907 until shortly before his death. With noted Milwaukee actor Anthony J. Lukaszewski, Landowski organized and directed the work of the Opera Club, which presented the operas The Bohemian Girl, Martha, Il Trovatore, Halka, Last Waltz, and Masked Ball, in Milwaukee and Chicago. The collection presents excellent visual and written documentation both of Landowski's career, and of the history and productions of the Opera Club. Four of the operatic productions are represented by cast photographs, news clippings of contemporary reviews, and programs, as are two later productions directed by Landowski at St. Hyacinth's Church. In addition, there is a biographical sketch, wedding announcement and photograph, personal photographs, and a handwritten constitution of the St. Cecilia Choir at St. Vincent de Paul's Church (1906).

Papers and photographs concerning Lukaszewski, a former editor of the Milwaukee Nowiny Polskie and other newspapers, radio broadcaster, actor, and active participant in Milwaukee dramatic societies. With John Landowski, Lukaszewski was a founding member of the Milwaukee Polish Opera Club in 1920; he also acted in many productions and wrote plays and poetry. The collection includes several photographs of Lukaszewski in costume and as an older man; photographs of the cast of Halka (both 1923 and 1925 versions), together with programs and the first English translation, written by Lukaszewski in 1949; news clippings, and copies of his writings. Records of a former locally-oriented community theater that grew into a nationally known professional repertory theater, consisting of correspondence and general and financial records of the theater and its associated drama school, production files, and other material. The collection documents the problems that beset a regional theater in building an audience, maintaining good relations with the community, achieving financial solvency, and attaining administrative and artistic stability.
Included are correspondence and general records of Drama, Incorporated, the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, and various groups associated with them, such as the Theatre Communications Group; financial and fundraising records; ticket sales and box office records; insurance and legal records; files on royalties, rental fees, and performing rights; union records; contracts; a few scripts; personnel records; technical production and operational records; some photographs; promotion and publicity materials; publications; and records of the Fred Miller Theatre League and of the School of Professional Arts. The Heinz Roemheld Music Collection consists of sheet music and musical scores handwritten in pencil or pen on standard and oversize score sheets and onion paper, a very thin white paper. Except for some frayed edges, the collection is in good physical condition. Some of the pencil scores are very light and difficult to read, and they are sketchy in detail. Filed among these handwritten originals are numerous reproductions of individual instrumental and vocal parts and arrangements. The bulk of this collection is undated, with the dated items ranging from 1915 to 1973. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers of Conrad A. E. Saskowski, a son of Polish immigrants, who established himself as a composer of operettas and musicals that disseminated Polish-American culture to Milwaukee. The bulk of the collection (1939-1949) is comprised of compositions arranged by genre--operettas, sacred works, and musicals. In addition to the vocal and orchestral parts, this collection features scripts and synopses of his compositions, and correspondence, publicity materials, and programs relating to his productions. As a founding member of the Polish Fine Arts Club, Saskowski was an active promoter of both the club's activities and his own compositions, especially his two major operettas "Polonaise" (1939) and "Blond Squaw" (1949) which was revived in 1978 and renamed "Spring Song." Of particular note is Saskowski's working relationship with Jerzy Bojanowski who conducted the premiere of "Polonaise" in 1939 and helped arrange Saskowski's "Credo from Latin Mass in A" (1978) that was subsequently titled "Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Czestochowa" (1984) and ultimately performed at Saskowski's funeral. Miscellaneous records, consisting mainly of correspondence, faculty meeting minutes, curriculum guidelines and programs from various performances given by music department faculty and students. Administrative correspondence is largely between the department chair and the Dean of the School of Fine Arts regarding curriculum planning, budgeting and departmental activities. Other correspondence regards planning of music performance series such as Summer Evenings of Music, The Fine Arts Quartet, Christmas Festivals of Courtly Music and Music-From-Almost-Yesterday. The faculty meeting minutes document curriculum changes, awarding of scholarships and fellowships, faculty appointments and the development and changes of the graduate program of the department. The files also contain information on guest artists who performed at UWM, including The New York Woodwind Quintet, The Dave Brubeck Jazz Quartet, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Miscellaneous records of the Deans of the School and records of the departments that preceded the School's creation in 1963. Consists largely of correspondence with the School's departments of Film, Theatre and Dance, Art, and Music and visiting artists concerning curriculum, budgeting and events planning. Contains meeting minutes, affirmative action material and minority program and retention material as well as items on urban services of the school. Also includes posters and programs of art exhibitions and performances. Unrestricted material from search and screen committees concern the hiring of two of the School's deans as well as various faculty positions. Includes calendars published in the 1930s by The Wisconsin Printmakers, an organization of Wisconsin Artists which featured artworks by students and faculty of Milwaukee State Teachers College. Miscellaneous collected by Sylvia Zielinski, a Milwaukee high school teacher, member of the Milwaukee Catholic Symphony Orchestra, and former music teacher. The collection includes five sheets of mounted clippings on Polish leaders taken from the Kuryer Polski and saved by Sylvia Zielinski's mother, two programs from MCSO performances in which she participated (1980), and several holy cards and a religious medallion.
