Photographic Collection of El Movimiento in Milwaukee's Latino Community, 1968-1971.

Collection consists of 33 photographs documenting the Latino civil rights
movement in Milwaukee from the late 1960s through the 1970s. The photos document
several aspects of El Movimiento ("The Movement" in English) including
rallies, hearings, artworks, the Brown Berets, key individuals (including Cesar
Chavez and Father Groppi), and public demonstrations in both Milwaukee and
Madison. The photos were intended for use in the political community newspaper
La Guardia, and were given to Juan Alvarez by Charlie Quesada (former editor of La
Guardia) in the mid 1970s. Most of the photographs were taken by Chuck
Miller. Collection also includes the October, 1969, issue of La Guardia,
and three newspaper clippings from Soul City Times showing 1970 welfare

Papers of a Puerto Rican activist and leader of Milwaukee's Latin community from
1970 to 1979. Baez held a number of positions in the areas of
bilingual/bicultural education, juvenile delinquency, and curriculum
development. The collection illustrates his work with several agencies, among
them, the Advocate Education Program-Teacher Corps for Corrections-Milwaukee,
the Community Independent Learning Program, the Bicultural Education, and the
Midwest National-Origin Desegregation-Assistance Center of the University of
Wisconsin--Milwaukee. Baez's papers include fragmentary personal material, such
as correspondence, financial records, and writings and notes; minutes,
memoranda, and correspondence, budgets, grant proposals, curriculum studies and
reports, and student papers from the various agencies; and reference files, and
papers from education conferences. After leaving Milwaukee in 1979, Baez
returned to his native Puerto Rico to work with the youth in his home town of

Legislative papers of a Democrat from Milwaukee who served in the Wisconsin
Assembly and Senate from 1971 to 1982. Alphabetically-arranged subject files
contain press releases, newsletters, questionnaires, schedules, and writings as
well as constituent correspondence and floor debate material on abortion,
Milwaukee politics and government, probate reform, taxes, and other issues
legislative concern. Committee files document Berger's leadership of the Joint
Committee for the Review of Administrative Rules, although the files are not the
official committee records. Especially well documented is an investigation of
the Bureau of Migrant and Rural Services by Senator Peter Bear's Legislative
Oversight Subcommittee. Other notable committee files pertain to Berger's work
on condominium legislation and product liability. Additional files inherited
from Bear pertain to volunteerism, and records from Jerome Martin pertain to the
Senate Subcommittee on Small Business. (See files on Bureau of Migrant and

A history of Milwaukee's Spanish Center (officially named the Council for
Spanish Speaking, Inc., and established in 1964), plus notes about Noemi
Rodriguez, head of the Center's credit union, Le Centro Hispano, and a 1972
credit union annual report.

Papers, mainly 1934-1990, of a Wisconsin labor leader which document his
organizing work (1937-1963) for the Wisconsin AFL and later for the AFL-CIO, and
two lengthy strikes at the Kohler Company. In addition to his weekly organizers
reports, the collection includes correspondence, scrapbooks (only available on
microfilm), photographs of commemorative marches, minutes, appeals for
donations, financial records, picket rolls, and other records from the strike
(1934-1941) of Federal Labor Union 18545 against the Kohler Company. About the
1954-1965 strike of UAW-CIO Local 833 there are scrapbooks, correspondence as
director of Region XII of the AFL-CIO, daily strike bulletins, and material of
the Kohler Workers Association, the company union. The subject files include
correspondence, clippings, minutes and other materials pertaining to varied
individuals, topics and organizations such as the American Party, Andrew
Biemiller, the presidential candidacy of Henry M. Jackson, various state and
regional COPE committees, the Sheboygan County Labor Council, the Milwaukee
County Labor Council, the LaCrosse Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, and the
organization of migrant farm workers in Wisconsin by Obreros Unidos. Finding

Records of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin organization that encourages public awareness
and preservation of the historical and architectural heritage of the Greater
Milwaukee area. Most of the records date from the 1970's and early 1980's, when
the organization was named Historic Walker's Point (HWP). The collection
documents HWP's early history, especially its efforts to involve
Spanish-speaking residents, obtain funding sources, create arts festivals and
walking tours, and receive a designation as a National Historic District. Also
included are pamphlets published by Historic Milwaukee, Inc. in the 1990s for
walking tours in historic Milwaukee neighborhoods. Finding

Records of an urban congregation located on the near south side of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin and incorporated circa 1977. Organizational records include the
congregation's constitution, correspondence, minutes of council meetings, and
minutes of committee meetings. Subject files include correspondence, flyers,
guidelines, notes, and other materials pertaining to church governance and to
projects in which the congregation was engaged such as a food pantry, a child
care center, an outreach ministry in the Hispanic community, and a health care
program in partnership with the Marquette University nursing school. A 1989
grant proposal to the Lilly Endowment contains an excellent description of the
church and its programs. The collection also contains photocopies of
unidentified photographs of the church building and parishioners. Finding

Papers, mainly 1983-1986, of a former Democratic legislator (Assembly 1967-1982;
Senate, 1982-1986) consisting of alphabetical subject files and files on
problems of individual constituents. The subject files contain correspondence
and memoranda from constituents, colleagues, advocacy groups, and staff members;
speeches and statements; policy papers and reports; minutes; and clippings. They
relate to legislative issues such as education, nursing homes, and taxes and to
committees on which Otte served including the Senate Transportation Committee,
the Migrant Labor Council, and the Legislative Council's Special Committee on

Research paper by Pokorny, a student at St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, describing the response within the Catholic Church's Archdiocese of
Milwaukee to the growth of the Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and
migrant worker communities in southeastern Wisconsin from the 1920s to 1985.
Based mainly on newspaper accounts and on information solicited from past and
current Church workers, the paper discusses activities in individual parishes as
well as social initiatives (the Migrant Worker Program, the Spanish Center in
Milwaukee, the Racine Spanish Center, the Hispanic Apostolate), and events such
as the creation of Cristo Rey Parish. The paper includes maps, notes, and a
bibliography of resources which complement the State Historical Society of
Wisconsin's publication, Hispanics in Wisconsin: A Bibliography.

eleven Milwaukee, Wisconsin residents concerning the history of
Mexican-Americans in Milwaukee. Conducted in Spanish and English by Sevilla, a
Milwaukee resident doing private research, the interviews include much general
biographical information on the interviewees as well. Includes documents,
summaries and abstracts concerning the interviews, and twenty-five audio
cassette tapes of interview material. Finding

organization formed to aid migrant workers resettle into other work and to
assist them in adjusting to nonmigratory life. Includes a planning document, a
summary of United Migrant Opportunities Services (UMOS) projects, a project
budget, publications including UMOS' 20th anniversary album, notes, and an
annual report for 1984.

Records of the Center, which had a mission of serving educational needs of low
and moderate income people, racial and ethnic minorities, and non-traditional
students. The records document the Center's participation in a variety of
programs, including Goals 2000, Harambee Development Corporation, Small is
Beautiful Inc., Globescope 2000, and the Sherman Park Community Association. The
files provide details on methods of instruction, housing and solar research,
extended education, and community service. Center directors Dan Folkman and
Belden Paulson created most of the records, and interfiled their personal
research and teaching records with official Center records. The collection also
contains extensive documentation of the research and teaching by Center faculty
members Claire Halverson, Reuben Harpole and Eugene Thuot. Finding

UWM Archival Collection 48
Collection contains records of the Dean of Students from the University of
Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM) and its predecessor institutions. Most of the records
date from the 1960-1982; the materials predating 1960 concern fraternities and
sororities. The collection largely consists of files of UWM student
organizations, including fraternities and sororities, student government, and a
wide variety of ethnic, political, professional, religious, and social groups.
Most of the files contain only a charter application form and a group
registration form, which lists the name and function of the group, its
off-campus affiliation, meeting location, names and addresses of officers, and
faculty advisor.
Some files contain officer change reports, a constitution and bylaws,
correspondence, newsclippings, photographs, and publicity materials. The most
extensive files exist for campus fraternities and sororities, and Vietnam-era
protest groups. Files also exist for a number of student groups for
African-Americans, Hispanics, and women. Finding

Records of one of Milwaukee’s oldest neighborhood groups that document its
involvement in economic, business, and community development, residential
improvement, and the effort to curb illegal liquor consumption and prostitution
in Milwaukee. The West End Community Association, originally founded in July
1972 as a Latino organization, was established to work toward the economic,
educational, and recreational betterment of the community and of the individuals
within the neighborhood. The Association serves the area of Milwaukee bounded by
Wisconsin Avenue on the south, Highland Boulevard on the north, North 20th
Street on the east, and Highway 41 on the west. Finding
