Records of UW-Milwaukee's student chapter of Alpha Tau Delta, a national fraternity for professional nurses. The collection contains records of the local chapter as well as some national organization materials. The collection includes general information about the organization, constitutions and by-laws, handbooks, pledging and initiation materials, hymns, membership lists, minutes, correspondence, chapter reports and financial information, as well as scrapbooks and memorabilia. Legislative papers of a Democrat from Milwaukee who served in the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate, 1971-1982. Alphabetically-arranged subject files contain press releases, newsletters, questionnaires, schedules, and writings as well as constituent correspondence and floor debate material on abortion, Milwaukee politics and government, probate reform, taxes, and other issues of legislative concern. Committee files document Berger's leadership of the Joint Committee for the Review of Administrative Rules, although the files are not the official committee records. Especially well documented is an investigation of the Bureau of Migrant and Rural Services by Senator Peter Bear's Legislative Oversight Subcommittee. Other notable committee files pertain to Berger's work on condominium legislation and product liability. Additional files inherited from Bear pertain to volunteerism, records from Jerome Martin pertain to the Senate Subcommittee on Small Business, and correspondence regarding the Department of Health and Human Services, and hospital closings. Collection contains the unpublished speeches and workshop addresses by Dr. Helen Creighton, Distinguished Professor of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee. The addresses and speeches which Creighton gave at nursing conventions and workshops focused on malpractice issues; the role of the nurse in communicating and observing medical procedures; and ethical concerns of prolonging life and terminating life support systems. The collection also includes biographical information, newspaper clippings, and undated photographs of Creighton. An inclusive bibliography lists over 300 articles written by Creighton for publication mainly in Nursing Management and Supervisor Nurse in which she served as a monthly contributing editor (1970-1987). Included in the collection are architectural drawings prepared by Gurda for buildings which he designed, among them the new church of St. Adalbert's Parish (1930), St. Francis Hospital (1956), Wisconsin's first drive-in banking window at Lincoln State Bank (1950), and several elementary schools.Also included are two newspaper articles, 1980 and 1981, and a magazine piece, regarding two of Gurda's designs are included in a folder of miscellaneous materials. Gurda family records consist of a family tree (with a preliminary sketch); naturalization papers of Sylvester Gurda, father of Francis (1888); a small book kept by Sylvester in which he recorded birth and baptismal information for all of his children; family obituaries; and a Milwaukee Common Council resolution in memory of Victoria Gurda (1941). Family photos include a wedding photo of Sylvester and Victoria (Orzechowski) Gurda, a photo of Leon Gurda with the Company K staff, 127th Infantry National Guard, at Camp MacArthur, Waco, Texas, November 4, 1917, a photo of the Gurda brothers and sisters in 1952, several photos of what may be the dedication ceremonies of St. Francis Hospital, a construction site, an early 20th century photo of a Milwaukee (?) police officer, and others that are unidentified. Papers of a former Baptist minister and Milwaukee Socialist leader, primarily including minutes, reports, organizational materials, speeches, photographs, a film, and other papers of American Relief for Germany, an organization which raised money for German relief after World War II; school notebooks, two 1907 diaries, a lengthy recorded autobiography, and other biographical materials; and fragmentary items concerning Socialists, Milwaukee Blacks, Immanuel Baptist Church, and Roger Williams Hospital. Account books of Dr. George E. Hoyt, a Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin physician, containing names of patients, brief notes on charges, and amounts charged. Also contains indexes for the first two volumes and a folder of additional accounting notes, telegrams, and a recipe for making a local anaesthetic. Also included are account ledgers kept by Hoyt's father, Dr. William Moody Hoyt, and his mother, Dr. Nancy E. Hoyt. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Legislative papers of a conservative Republican who represented Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, in the assembly from 1966 through 1982. The collection consists of alphabetical subject files containing constituent correspondence, reference material, newsletters, and questionnaires. Topics which are well documented include abortion, aid to private schools, sex education, and Wauwatosa. There are some materials on hospitals and the Department of Health and Human Services. The collection also includes one box of distributions, conservative reprints and publications, which Klicka circulated with his personal endorsement. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Fragmentary records of the Service, incorporated in 1954 and dissolved in 1971. Jointly sponsored by the Milwaukee District of the Wisconsin State Nurses Association and the Milwaukee Hospital Council, the service was formed "to secure private duty nurses for the community and to serve as a placement center for nurses." Includes articles of incorporation; minutes and correspondence from its closing period; rules, sample forms, and clippings.

Milwaukee Series 6
Minutes of the Board (1905-1955); monthly reports of the health officer and health nurse (1932-1951); and correspondence relating to health concerns, (1930-1951). Minutes include orders to abate nuisances, and rules and regulations adopted by the board. After the mid-1930s, the board became more active and developed a preventative health program. After September 1943, the monthly reports of the health officer include his correspondence and details of his investigations of school and public health programs, hospitalization of contagious patients, and sewage and sanitation problems.

Record of the proceedings of the Board which is responsible for public health programs and which supervises the work of city sanitarians and public health courses. Collection includes records relating to the inspection of restaurants and other food-handling establishments, public health nuisances, milk inspection, control of infectious diseases, and school and public health nursing programs.

Papers of a Milwaukee native and US Army Sergeant 1st Class who served at Base Hospital No. 22 (named Beau Desert) near Bordeaux, France during World War I. Most of the collection consists of photographs, originally stored in two scrapbooks. For preservation reasons, one scrapbook was disassembled. The images include unit photographs, and scenes of camp life, German prisoners, hospital wards, nurses, patients, and training in Milwaukee. The unit was staffed by men and women organized by the Milwaukee County chapter of the American Red Cross. A unit history published in 1940 provides details on the origin, operations, and demobilization of the Hospital. Finding aid available in the Archives. Soldiers marching. (6500 bytes)

Records of Sinai Samaritan Medical Center and its predecessor institutions, Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, Evangelical Deaconess School of Nursing, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse, Milwaukee Hospital, the Milwaukee Lutheran Hospital, the Milwaukee Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. Most of the records are from the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital and the Milwaukee Hospital; each of these series include annual, department, and statistical reports, property records, news clippings, and staff newsletters. The collection contains an extensive number of photographs of buildings, staff, and facilities dating from the 1878 through the 1990s. The collection also contains records of the auxiliaries include minutes of meetings, newsletters, and photographs. The records of the schools of nursing include commencement programs, yearbooks, student records, photographs, class notes of students, and alumnae newsletters. (10195 bytes) Fragmentary records regarding graduates of St. Joseph's Hospital Training School for Nurses, with a small addition pertaining to Trinity Hospital School for Nurses, both of which later combined to form the Marquette University College of Nursing. Includes certificate of incorporation of St. Joseph's School;  minutes, articles of incorporation, and by-laws of the St. Joseph's Nurses Alumni Association; graduate lists of St. Joseph's and Trinity Schools. St. Mary's Hill Hospital (Milwaukee, Wis.).

Records of a private psychiatric hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which offered both psychiatric patient care and instructional programs in psychiatric nursing. The hospital was established in 1912 by Mother M. Alfons and Dr. Stephen S. Stack. Although classes in psychiatry were conducted from the hospital's inception, it was not until 1942 that a school department was organized and accredited by the State Department of Nurses. Thereafter, nursing students from various professional schools of nursing received twelve weeks of psychiatric nursing education at St. Mary's Hill. The collection pertains to the instructional nursing program and includes minutes of various administrative, faculty, and working committee meetings; accreditation materials; a faculty manual; monthly reports to the Wisconsin State Department of Nurses; yearly reports relating to the nursing education program; and two brochures providing a history of the program. There are also some materials relating to nursing education in Wisconsin. Finding aid available in the Archives.

St. Mary's Hospital (Milwaukee, Wis.).

The collection consists of two volumes of records: a patient register (1859-1905), and a minute book (1859-1962). The patient register lists patient names, country of origin, age, date of admission, disease, and in some cases the attending physician (1859-1900). There is no record for the years 1901-1902. Individual patient accounts are listed for 1903-1905. Board of Directors' meetings are documented by minutes of annual and special meetings (1859-1962). These minutes record by-laws, election of members, and financial policy decisions. St. Mary's Hospital was incorporated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1859 as a Catholic hospital run by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph. The hospital admitted patients needing a variety of medical treatment. Included were soliders and sailors of the Civil War and the War of 1812. The hospital was administered by a Board of Directors of the Sisters of Charity. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Invitation (4574 bytes) Contains all existing records of the school. Records concern administration, faculty, accreditation, the curriculum, students and alumnae, historical and miscellaneous files; plus photographs and news clippings. The collection documents the school from its inception in 1894 to its final year in 1969. Also provides information on the Sisters of Charity; St. Mary's Hospital; a variety of medical and nursing topics; and detailed records of students' disciplinary, scholastic, and clinical failures. Small Collection 69 contains miscellaneous materials concerning the 1972 dedication of an historical marker at the School. Finding aid available in the Archives.

UWM Archival Collection 17
Records of the UWM Dept. of Exceptional Education and its predecessors. The majority of the records are from the 1960s and appear to have been created or compiled by the department's chairperson.

The collection contains a large number of correspondence files (1913-1972) from the chairperson documenting his/her activities, department functions, curriculum and course developments, student testing, practice teaching, and budget requirements. Correspondence with the dean of the School of Education and letters of department faculty members are also found in the correspondence files. Also included is a series of Alice Streng correspondence (1934-1969), much of it concerning the education of deaf children and the training of teachers of the deaf. A large number of the letters appear to be from friends and/or former students seeking advice or sharing experiences. Of particular interest are letters received during the World War II years from people stationed or teaching overseas, or working in hospitals on the home front. Also documented are Streng's activities as chairperson of the department.

The faculty minutes (1959-1988) note curriculum developments, faculty activities and department events, such as workshops and institutes, committee reports, and general announcements.

The collection also contains records of the Laboratory School for Special Learning Disabilities and its predecessor the School for Research on Language Disorders. Included are reports, parents' guides, handbooks, brochures, policy statements, curriculum and executive committee meeting minutes, and final documents regarding the move to the Campus School.

Other records include miscellaneous committee files; workshop brochures, correspondence, and reports; studies; guidelines for student teachers in schools for the deaf; and a scrapbook (1929-1950) of the Winnie Memorial Fund, a scholarship fund established in memory of Alonzo J. Winnie who established the department for training teachers of the deaf at the Milwaukee Normal School in 1913. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Records of the Medical Technology Program, the bulk of which consist of various meeting files and materials documenting the development of a master of science degree in medical technology. Many of the records were created or compiled by Edward A. Birge who served as chairman and director of the program. The earliest records document the development of the Medical Technology Program. The collection also documents course and curriculum developments, hospital affiliations and clinical training, enrollment, budget, staffing, space planning, and other matters of concern. The files regarding the establishment of a master of science degree in medical technology include proposals, a consultant's report, and correspondence. Finding aid available in the Archives.

The bulk of the collection documents the joint Columbia Hospital School of Nursing/UWM teaching project which the Associate Dean administered. The project allowed nursing students to take classes at UWM while still enrolled in Columbia's nursing program. The records document the contract between UWM and Columbia Hospital, admissions criteria, course equivalencies, correspondence between students and faculty, prerequisites for science courses, and recruitment drive activities. The remainder of the collection documents the Shorewood High School Project, a joint program of the UWM Mathematics Department and Shorewood High School, and administered by the Associate Dean. The project taught university level mathematics courses at the high school level. The records document the budget, payroll, fees, class enrollment, grade curve, joint contract, faculty correspondence, and procedures required to enroll in the program. Records of UWM's School of Nursing Associate Dean of Undergraduate Program mostly consisting of undergraduate curriculum committee minutes, as well as records documenting the creation of a series of instructional nursing videos. The collection also includes correspondence and minutes of the Nursing Students' Association and its predecessor the Student Nurse Organization, as well as similar materials for Alpha Tau Delta, the national fraternity for professional nursing. The records document the administrations of Deans Francis H. Cunningham (Director of the Division of Nursing, 1965-1966 and Dean of the School of Nursing, 1966-1967), Inez G. Hinsvark (1967-1975), Mary E. Conway (1976-1980), Louise C. Smith (Acting, 1975-1976), and Norma M. Lang (1980-1992). Most of the records date from 1968-1979; the small number of records predating 1967 are from the Milwaukee School of Nursing, which was a division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing. The records document the funding, accreditation, and development of the School of Nursing, the Instructional Media Program, the Nurse Utilization Project, and the School's Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects. There are numerous files on Milwaukee-area clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and Planned Parenthood because the School conducted classes and placed interns in the organizations. The records document the meetings between officials of the organizations and the School, the information presented at the classes, and the use of School interns. Also well documented is the development of courses taught within the School, although much of the information on individual courses is scattered throughout the collection. Washington Realty Company (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Records, 1900-1957.

UWM Manuscript Collection 113
Miscellaneous records of a realty company, including articles of incorporation, by-laws, and minutes of meetings. By late 1957, Milwaukee Hospital had become the sole shareholder in the company. Upon the company's dissolution in December 1957, all assets transferred to the ownership of Milwaukee Hospital. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Records of the District, the Wisconsin Nurses Club and Directory, and some records of the Milwaukee District of the Wisconsin League of Nursing Education. Records include correspondence with hospitals, the state board of health and the Internal Revenue Service concerning programs, civic affairs, legislation, and general problems facing the nursing profession such as unemployment or shortages of trained personnel. Also includes materials on attempts at professional self-regulation, establishment of standard fees, improved working conditions, and reduction in hours of duty. Especially well documented are efforts to recruit and train nurses in World War II. Also contains minutes of the regular monthly meetings and the board of directors, and a few files from committees.
