Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.

There are restrictions on access to the collection; consult an archivist for details. Records of a professional repertory company begun as a community theater. The records document the problems that beset a local theater while building an audience, maintaining good relations with the community, achieving financial solvency, and attaining administrative and artistic stability. The bulk of the materials is arranged chronologically by season, beginning in 1953-1954, which followed the fiscal year. The records of individual performances are limited to financial records, programs, reviews, scripts, and photographs. The records from 1969-1978 consist mostly of technical information relating to productions at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in Milwaukee, and at a smaller experimental theater at Court Street, as well as special productions performed at festivals or on tour. There is also information on the MRT's move from the Fred Miller Theatre to the Todd Wehr Theatre in the PAC during the 1969-1970 season. Also present are similar records for the Fred Miller Theatre League, a women's support group; and the company's School of Professional Arts. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers of a pioneer Milwaukee radio broadcaster and of his son, Stanley H., who succeeded him in 1947. The collection documents ethnic programming from the 1930s through the 1950s, and includes biographical information, a copy of Nastal's World War I recollections, programs logs, and scripts. The logs, written in English, are from Our Polish Hour (1947-1954); the scripts, in Polish, are from Theater of the Air and daily serialized sketches. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers of a Milwaukee journalist and real estate agent who was active in the Polish National Alliance and in the resettlement of World War II refugees. Included are correspondence, printed documents, programs, convention records, and microfilmed scrapbooks of newsclippings regarding Pankiewicz and his wife Emilia. Also contains microfilmed scrapbooks about Emilia's father, Jozef Kosciuk, a noted actor in Milwaukee Polish theater and film productions in the 1910s and 1920s, including a few playbills and descriptions of productions at the Pulaski Theatre (Teatr Pulaski), Nowosci Theatre, the Lincoln Theatre, and performances by the Polish Dramatic Club; and a poster used to advertise the film Halka (1925). Partridge, Charlotte.

Charlotte Partridge was the director of the Layton Art School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This collection generally illustrates more about her interest in art activities than about her actual role in events or organizations. The collection consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, announcements, brochures, bulletins, catalogues, and reports from a variety of art groups and on a variety of art-related subjects. Personal papers and correspondence are almost non-existent, and much of the material came from mass mailings. The collection is organized in three series: education, museums, and organizations. Within each series, materials are alphabetically arranged by folder title and chronologically within folders. Researchers interested in museum or education associations should look in the organizations series. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Records of a Milwaukee group founded to disseminate Polish culture by performing and sponsoring plays, concerts, and operas. Included are minutes of meetings (1930-1933); correspondence; fragmentary financial records; membership records; programs, some script materials, clippings, and photographs from performances. The Heinz Roemheld Music Collection consists of sheet music and musical scores handwritten in pencil or pen on standard and oversized score sheets and onion paper, a very thin white paper. Except for some frayed edges, the collection is in good physical condition. Some of the pencil scores are very light and difficult to read, and they are sketchy in detail. Filed among these handwritten originals are numerous reproductions of individual instrumental and vocal parts and arrangements. The bulk of this collection is undated, with the dated items ranging from 1915 to 1973. Finding aid available in the Archives.

UWM Manuscript Collection 58
Records consist of the administrative files of the Society, which supported public interest in the arts. Includes minutes of the Board of Directors meetings and treasurer's reports, the Society's annual art exhibition, minutes of annual meetings, annual reports of the various interest groups, and extensive minutes of the Painters' Group meetings. Files contain the Society's monthly newsletter and the administrative materials and news clippings pertaining to the Piano Talenteens competition. There are membership rosters, officers' reports and scrapbooks of news clippings and administrative items. One folder contains materials on the Wisconsin Composers Program, a biennial event which featured the music of Wisconsin composers. Several pieces of member artwork are included in the records. Miscellaneous papers of a pioneer Wisconsin newspaperman, politician, and businessman. Most of the collection consists of letters to Sholes' wife Sarah, usually of a personal nature. Some of the letters dating 1853-1855 discuss meetings with Horace Greeley and Phineas T. Barnum; impressions of William Lloyd Garrison as a speaker; descriptions of New York museums, a spiritualist seance, and a reception given by Senator Charles Durkee. A letter dating February 9, 1854 describes a performance of Uncle Tom's Cabin at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C.

There are some references to Sholes' work in New York overseeing the printing and sale of railroad bonds; to his purchase of telegraph lines in Wisconsin; his activities as speaker of the Wisconsin state assembly; and to his brother Christopher. Also contains other miscellaneous letters, and photographs of Sholes and his wife. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Shue, Larry.

Miscellaneous papers of a noted Milwaukee, Wisconsin playwright and actor. The collection includes drafts, scripts, news clippings, and publicity materials for Shue's plays, poems, and writings, including The Foreigner, Grandma Duck is Dead, The Nerd,and Wenceslas Square.Also includes an extensive number of Shue's letters to and from colleagues and friends concerning personal matters and their careers, and heavily annotated scripts of productions in which Shue acted. Numerous photographs document Shue's travels, especially to the Far East. Chicago Report, a family newsletter written by Shue's father, provides details on the family's activities, careers, and travels. The collection contains a recording of the memorial service at the Todd Wehr Theater following Shue's September 1985 death in a plane crash.  Finding aid available in the Archives.

Papers of a Benton Harbor, Michigan musician and educator. Collection contains general files of Smythe's (nee Hobbs) 1889-1890 tour of Germany, including typescripts of Smythe's letters to her family, and newspaper clippings of her letters that were published in an unidentified newspaper. The general files on the European trip also contain postcards, several photographs, and copies of concert programs she attended. The collection also includes incoming letters (1887-1939) from a wide variety of musicians and writers, including Zona Gale, and two letters from Booker T. Washington concerning a speaking engagement in Benton Harbor. The miscellaneous items include an undated photograph of Smythe, and her notes on the life of Johann Sebastian Bach. The collection also contains bulletins from The French Folklore Society, the National Federation of Music Clubs, and the Wisconsin Federation of Music Clubs; Starr's writings including a play entitled Jesous Ahatonhia, a brochure "Let's Have a Folk Festival," and several journal articles. Records of a dance group, founded in 1975, which promoted Polish folk culture through authentic presentation of dances, songs, traditions, and costumes of Poland. The collection documents the history, activities, and publicity of the group. Miscellaneous personal papers of the former Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee, professor and chair of the Art Department, including audio cassette tapes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and slides. The majority of the papers document Ulbricht's involvement with the Works Administration Progress (WPA) Handicraft Project in Milwaukee, which employed workers to make draperies, books, dolls, costumes, furniture, rugs, and prints. Most of the files concerning the Handicraft Project are Ulbricht's recollections of it, including a transcript of an extensive 1964 interview with Howard Erlich; a WPA Handicraft Project Exhibition held at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee Fine Arts Gallery in 1970, which contains a recording by Ulbricht conducted for the event; and recordings of other interviews in which she described the Project. Ulbricht's records of the Project include scrapbooks on the design and use of marionettes and puppets for Project staff and general administrative files. Ulbricht's correspondence files, dating from 1909-1978, contain letters to and from friends and colleagues on a variety of topics, including personal and professional activities and some discussion of the Handicraft Project. The collection also contains Ulbricht's notes, text, and drawings and plates for an unpublished book entitled "A Crafts Philosophy;" files on her activities at the Summer School of Painting in Saugatuck, Michigan, which she directed; and two volumes of "Applied Design Blockprinted Textiles." Miscellaneous records, mostly dating from the late 1960s through the 1970s, consisting of correspondence, faculty meeting minutes, curriculum guidelines and programs from various dance performances. The faculty meeting minutes (1966-1982) document course requirements, budget cuts, faculty appointments, unrestricted student evaluations of faculty, and upcoming student and faculty dance performances. The chair's correspondence is primarily to the dean of the School of Fine Arts relating to curriculum changes, personnel requests, and other department activities. The files also contain information on guest artists who performed with the Dance Department along with appearances by several nationally renowned dance companies. Other records in the collection include information on the development of the Milwaukee Ballet Company and its association with the School of Fine Arts. Finding aid available in the Archives.

The collection consists of the Vice Provost's (1963-1965) and Vice Chancellor's (1965-1985) files. There are only a few records from the tenure of Vice Provosts George A. Parkinson (1956-1958) and Charles Vevier (1963-1965). The number of records generated began increasing after Vevier became Vice Chancellor in 1965, but most of the records were created in the 1970s by Vice Chancellor William L. Walters. Only a few records postdate 1979. The majority of the collection documents the Vice Chancellor's administration of UWM's centers, colleges, and schools. The records usually concern accreditation, general policy issues, funding, new courses, organizational structure, plans for expansion, staffing, and other administrative affairs.

The offices best documented in the collection include: the Center for Great Lakes Studies; College of Engineering and Applied Science; College of Letters & Science; Golda Meir Library; Graduate School; Instructional Media Laboratory; Office of Institutional Studies; School of Allied Health Professions; School of Architecture and Urban Planning; School of Business Administration; School of Education; School of Fine Arts; School of Library and Information Science; School of Nursing; and the School of Social Welfare. The records also contain numerous files concerning affirmative action for minorities and women on the UWM campus; the development of academic computing; the Caudill, Rowlett, and Scott master plan for UWM; and student protests during the Vietnam War.

The collection mainly consists of exhibition catalogs for exhibits which were held in the UWM Art Museum, the Fine Arts Galleries, and the Art History Gallery. The collection also includes some miscellaneous exhibition promotional materials. The UWM Department of Art and/or the UWM School of Fine Arts sponsored a number of the exhibits. Photocopied scrapbooks of a leader of the Perhift Players (Peretz Hirshbein Folk Theatre), a Yiddish theater company formed in Milwaukee in 1920 as the Young Literary and Dramatic Society, which in 1931 became the Yiddish Drama League; containing programs, clippings, letters, photographs, and minutes documenting Weinshel's performances and activities with the Perhift Players, the Milwaukee Players, and the Center Players of the Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee. Zielinski, Edward J., 1907-

Papers of a musician and conductor of the Milwaukee Catholic Symphony Orchestra, including personal correspondence, biographical information, minutes of the advisory board and programs of performances of the Symphony, drafts of program notes written by Zielinski, newsclippings, and music scores of Polish Christmas carols composed and translated by Victor Prawdzik. Also included are a few other programs from Milwaukee orchestras occasionally conducted by Zielinski. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Edward Zielinski, conductor of the Milwaukee Catholic Symphomy Orchestra, taught mathematics and music at Pulaski High School in Milwaukee and the Wisconsin College of Music. Zielinski joined the Milwaukee Catholic Symphony as director in 1944, one year after its founding. Several members of the Zielinski family have been associated with this orchestra and its counterpart, the Catholic Youth Symphony. Finding aid available in the Archives.

Miscellaneous items collected by Sylvia Zielinski, a Milwaukee high school teacher, member of the Milwaukee Catholic Symphony Orchestra, and former music teacher. The collection includes five sheets of mounted clippings on Polish leaders taken from the Kuryer Polski and saved by Sylvia Zielinski's mother, two programs from MCSO performances in which she participated (1980), and several holy cards and a religious medallion.
