ABSTRACT: The Bureau of Health Statistics has produced two statewide indexes to the pre-1907 birth registrations. These are cataloged as Series 2072, Index to registrations of births. One is arranged alphabetically, the other chronologically by date of birth. Each index lists the individual’s name, date and county of birth, and a reel and document number where the entry can be located in the Registrations of births (Wisconsin Series 2070). Also contains entries for reels 2-3 of the Delayed registrations of births (Wisconsin Series 2071).

In the chronological index, all entries for which a complete birth date was not given in the registry volume are listed at the beginning of the index in alphabetical order by county. Some entries for the year 1900 appear at the beginning of the chronological listing with the year shown as "OO." In the alphabetical listing, unnamed infants are sometimes entered at the beginning of the entries for their surname and sometimes entered under the fathers’ name.

The reel numbers shown on the indexes do not refer to the reel numbers found in the Registrations of births (Wisconsin Series 2070) or the Delayed registrations of births (Wisconsin Series 2071). The former reel numbers are listed on the boxes, enabling the researcher to find the correct microfilm reel. There is also a listing on the finding aid for Wisconsin Series 2070 that gives the former and present reel numbers.

As with all indexes, researchers are cautioned to check variant spellings of names due to errors of transcription.
