Hitz family.

Papers, 1835-1993.

UWM Manuscript Collection 56

6.6 cubic ft. (2 record center cartons, 2 archives boxes, 1 small archives box, 6 oversize boxes, 1 index card box, and 1 oversize folder)

ABSTRACT: Papers of the Hitz family, compiled by John B. Hitz, with some information on other extended family, especially Frederick C. Winkler, mostly from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Includes family correspondence, mainly discussing their personal affairs, photographs, scrapbooks and artifacts that focus on the lives of these family members and other relatives; and genealogical histories for the Hitz and Winkler families. Of special interest is the typescript account of Carl Winkler's 1843 emigration from Bremen to New York; the letters and military records of Rudolph Hitz, who served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army in the Montana Territory from 1867-1870; and Henry Hitz's letters from the Army (where he was a surgeon) during World War I. The collection contains photographs of Frederick C. Winkler who served in the Civil War as a brevet brigadier general, but only a few of his wartime letters, which largely discuss family matters. The collection also contains news clippings, notes, and letters of Harold Hitz Burton, J. Edgar Hoover, and Norman Mailer, usually about personal affairs, sent to members of the Hitz family.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

SCOPE AND CONTENT: There are two indexes to the collection. The first index is arranged alphabetically by file name. The second index is arranged by the collection's box and folder numbers, which reflects the physical arrangement of the materials. Information on individual family members may be found in one or all the series. The contents of boxes 6-12 are not in folders because they are oversize, undersize or fragile. In most cases the materials are arranged by the family member who created them. When possible, women are listed by their married names.

The collection is physically organized into four series. The Textual Files (series 1), such as correspondence, memoirs, and genealogical histories. The Photographs (series 2) contain individual, group, and portrait images, as well as a few paintings. Photographs kept by the family in Notebooks, Scrapbooks, and Yearbooks are also included (series 3). The collection's Artifacts (series 4) include mementos such as medallions.

The papers of Elizabeth Kroeck Hitz include personal correspondence (1920-1992), photographs of her and her immediate family, and transcribed oral conversations conducted by her children shortly before her death.

The papers of Henry B. Hitz include personal correspondence (1889-1944) regarding his marriage, inventions, artistic interests, medical career, and army service. His memoirs, mementos, paintings, writings, photographs, and records of professional achievements are also included.

The papers of John B. Hitz include his professional achievements, mementos, memoirs, photographs, high school and college yearbooks, as well as sporadic correspondence (1912-1964), which covers his World War II service.

The papers of Louise D. (Winkler) Hitz include personal correspondence (1863-1869) with family and friends regarding her hobbies and activities. Numerous photographs of her are also included.

The papers of Rudolph B. Hitz include seven years of personal correspondence with his family (1863-1869). The bulk of this is between he and his wife while he worked as a surgeon away from home during and after the Civil War, especially his service at Fort Shaw, Montana Territory. Many photographs of him from the 1860s are included.

The papers of Frederick C. Winkler include photographs and correspondence that span 1862-1920, mostly concerning family matters.

ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized alphabetically by personal name or subject, then chronologically. Throughout the files, there are cross references between individual names or items. For example:
