Koelling, Eloise.

ABSTRACT: Collection of former UWM music professor and composer Eloise Koelling who spent the majority of her career at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (1947-1969). The collection includes various musical scores, primarily suites, sonatas, and concertos for orchestra, as well as children's music, which Koelling composed between 1954 and 1969. The collection also contains scrapbooks (1956-1985), consisting of letters to Koelling, mainly from other UWM professors and composers; concert programs, containing many of her compositions; newspaper clippings describing Koelling's career along with awards she received for her work; and miscellaneous correspondence.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Eloise Koelling graduated from Northwestern University and did post-graduate work at the Chicago Conservatory. She moved to Wisconsin in 1940 to accept a teaching position at Whitewater State College. In 1947, Koelling began her career as professor of music at the Milwaukee State Teachers College which later became the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee. She remained at UWM until her retirement in June 1969. While at UWM, Koelling resided by Spring Lake in the town of Palmyra in Waukesha County. She claimed that her lakeside home served as an inspiration for many of her musical compositions.

ARRANGEMENT: Boxes 1-6 contain musical scores arranged alphabetically by title. Box 7 contains scrapbooks, arranged chronologically and numbered 1-8, and folders containing correspondence, publications, and a list of Koelling's compositions.

ACQUISITION: The collection was donated to the Archives by Eloise Koelling in June 1991. An unknown donor donated several other items to the Archives sometime before 1989.

PROCESSING: Sandy Bartell processed the collection at the Archives in May through July 1994.
