ABSTRACT: Miscellaneous papers of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin lawyer who was actively
involved in human rights issues. The collection contains miscellaneous correspondence, reports
and writings concerning Bitker's involvement with the Governor's Committee on the United
Nations (1962-1979) and his support for international human rights. Also includes two reports of
the UN Charter Review Committee (1971, 1973), of which Bitker was Milwaukee Conference
chair; some correspondence and reports concerning the American Bar Associations
International Human Rights Committee, which Bitker chaired (1968-1977); and some materials on
his opposition to Dean Acheson's receiving a peace award from the World Affairs Council of
Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Journal (1969).
ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection
is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher

be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Bruno Voltaire Bitker was born in Milwaukee on February 5, 1989.
He studied law at Cornell University, was admitted to the Wisconsin bar, and began to
practice law in 1921. His areas of interest were human rights and international law. He received
citations from the city of Milwaukee for law and distinguished public service, and was honored
by the Wisconsin Supreme Court for lifelong services to the court and state.
Bitker was active in many organizations and commissions during his career. He was an officer
on the Governor's Commission on Human Rights from 1947-1956, and chairman for the
Governor's Committee on the United Nations from 1959-1976.

ACQUISITION: Bruno Bitker donated the collection to the Golda Meir Library in 1981. The
Library transferred the collection to the Archives on 14 January 1982.
PROCESSING: Mike Klawitter and Maria Waupochick processed the collection at the
Milwaukee Urban Archives in June 1992.
