Jerry Johnson collection of Wisconsin gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender ephemera, 1978-2006.

UWM Manuscript Collection 253

2.5 cubic ft. (6 boxes)

ABSTRACT:   Collection of ephemera gathered by Jerry Johnson relating to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender populations in Wisconsin from the late 1970s to 2006. Most materials pertain to Milwaukee-area organizations and businesses.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

SCOPE AND CONTENT: Collection consists of ephemera collected by Jerry Johnson from various bars and clubs, businesses, and organizations from the late 1970s to 2006. The collection provides broad and uneven documentation of Wisconsin gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender life and culture. Most of the material comes from the Milwaukee area, although the scope of the collection is statewide. Gay male and lesbian organizations are better represented than those of bisexuals and transgender individuals. Within these parameters, topical strengths include AIDS/HIV, leather bars, the Miss and Mr. Wisconsin Pageants, the establishment of the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, and early Pride celebrations and parades in Milwaukee. Typically, files include organizational newsletters, brochures, flyers, and postcard mailers.

ARRANGEMENT: Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder titles. Titles are based on the names of organizations, individuals, or general subjects (e.g., bars). Organizations may be assumed to be based in Milwaukee, unless indicated otherwise in the inventory.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Jerry Johnson is an active member of Milwaukee's LGBT community. He and his partner, Terry Boughner, published and edited Wisconsin Light newspaper from November 1987 to June 1998.

COLLECTION CITATION: This collection should be cited as:
