ABSTRACT:  Records of the Milwaukee Indian Education Committee (MIEC), formed to promote and foster educational achievement among the American Indian community in Milwaukee and the surrounding area.  The collection provides information on MIEC’s goals, activities, and achievements.
 

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the materials in this collection are open to all members of the public in accordance with state law (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39). However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The bulk of the collection consists of general files including correspondence, meeting minutes, and career day records. The collection also contains articles of incorporation, by-laws, evaluations, grant proposals, and needs assessments.  Of particular interest are the educational needs assessment materials of Milwaukee County's American Indian Community, developed, researched, and completed by MIEC in 1982. Also included in the collection is MIEC's survey with the Milwaukee Public Library of Milwaukee American Indian library users, library holdings, and related matters. This project helped establish a Native American Library Project at the Milwaukee Public Library. The collection also contains records regarding MIEC's relationship with the "WE Indians" Program and the Wisconsin Indian Educational Act of 1977.

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY:  Founded in 1971 and incorporated in 1977, the Milwaukee Indian Education Committee consists of voting delegates from each of Milwaukee's Indian-related educational agencies. The MIEC is a non-profit organization that remains actively involved in community projects. The MIEC assesses educational needs, develops community education and training workshops, offers scholarships, and holds an annual career event and graduation celebration. MIEC is also a regional organization of the Wisconsin Indian Education Association.

ARRANGEMENT:  The files are organized alphabetically by subject, then chronologically.
