ABSTRACT: Materials from three oral history projects, relating to Cuca
Records, Paramount Records, and the
Park People, conducted by Sarah Filzen. The
collection consists of taped interviews and transcripts for the Cuca
Records and Paramount Records
interviews and abstracts for the Park People
interviews.
The oral history projects relating to Cuca Records and Paramount Records, in which interviewees were asked about their background and their knowledge of the history of these local Wisconsin record labels, were conducted while Filzen was a graduate student in history at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee. Filzens history of Paramount Records is also included in the collection.
The Park People project studied changes in public policy and recreational needs in the Milwaukee County Park System. Diane Buck co-conducted several of the Park People interviews.
ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).
Interviewees for the Cuca Records and Paramount Records oral history projects signed release forms transferring rights to the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. Interviewees for the Park People oral history project, with the exception of Joy Teschner, transferred rights to the Park People. Joy Teschner did not sign a release form, so she remains the holder of copyright. Copies of the release forms are located in the Archives administrative case files. Consult an Archivist for details.
ARRANGEMENT: The files and tapes are organized alphabetically by oral history project, and then by interviewee name.
ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: Cuca Records, once located in Sauk City, Wisconsin, was founded by James Kirchstein in 1959 and actively produced LP recordings until the early 1970s. Cuca recorded and released primarily polka and ethnic music, though the label also issued pop, rhythm and blues, folk, and traditional jazz music.
Paramount Records, once located in Port Washington, Wisconsin, was established in 1917. While Paramounts earliest releases were mainly white ethnic recordings, in the early 1920s Paramount entered the race records market, recording music, such as blues and gospel, directed towards a black audience. Paramount issued its final record in 1932. In the late 1940s Milwaukeean John Steiner bought what was left of Paramounts inventory.
The Park People is a citizen advocacy group for all Milwaukee County Parks, promoting stewardship activities, educational programs, and restoration of green spaces and park facilities.
