ABSTRACT: This collection contains the records of the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, the first Unitarian-Universalist church in southeastern Wisconsin. The majority of the records date from the 1930s through the present. Earlier items include newspaper clippings from the 1840s, as well as Board of Trustees minutes from the second half of the nineteenth century. Some of the more interesting items in the collection are the original Bonds of Union for the Society, a long run of Board minutes, a large number of transcribed sermons, and a more than forty-year run of the church newsletter.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

SCOPE AND CONTENT: The records are organized into the following fourteen series, which reflect the order in which the collection was received:

  1. History and Historical Documents, 1841-1992. Series consists mainly of various drafts of church histories and materials commemorating the 1942 church centenary. Items of note in this series are the original Bonds of Union for the church and the most recent church history, And the Spirit Continues: The First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, 1842-1992.
  2. Administration, 1859-2005. Series includes board of trustee minutes, materials relating to church committees, and congregational meeting agendas. The Board minutes are particularly complete, dating from 1859 to 1999. One could also chart the changes in the church constitution and by-laws through the various drafts contained in the series, dating from 1859 to 1992.
  3. Financial, 1896-1992. Series contains the Treasurer’s Reports (1896-1986) with a few gaps. Also included are records that document various Society fund drives throughout the second half of the twentieth century, as well as various investment and savings information.
  4. Buildings and Property, 1898-2000. Series concerns the upkeep of the physical church building, as well as various items within. While the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee has called three different buildings “home” throughout the years, the vast majority of this series pertains solely to the third building (and present church location) at the corner of Ogden and Astor. Also found within this series are records of the upkeep of the church organ and various pieces of artwork within the church. The Society’s applications for historical building status are within this series as well.
  5. Congregation, 1855-1998. Series actually contains little documentation of the church congregation aside from the membership directories (1962-1989). The series also contains guest books, which document visitors to the church (1927-1980). A noteworthy item from this series is a list of pew assignments from 1857.
  6. Ministry, 1855-1996. Series contains materials relating to many of the Society’s clergy. Included are papers concerning the ministries of Ralph E. Bailey (1935-1956), William Cushing (1841-1843), John Cyrus (1956-1981), W. C. Gannet (1869-1870), Walter Greenman (1908-1919), Andrew Kennedy (1986-present), Robert Loring (1919-1935), and Dale Robison (1982-1985).
  7. Worship, 1870-2004. Series constitutes the largest part of the collection. Sermons (1956-1992) and orders of service (1936-2001) make up the bulk of this series. The former documents both current events and the social, political, and spiritual concerns of the Unitarian faith, such as civil rights, the Vietnam War, and the divinity of Jesus. Included are transcribed speeches given by guest speakers. Also included is a folder pertaining to christenings, marriages, and funerals (1891-1919).
  8. Religious Education, 1904-1996. Series documents the church school program. Materials in this series document the school curriculum from 1969 to 1989. The series also includes a record of students from 1904 to 1933, and from 1967 to 1988, as well as religious education committee minutes from 1958 to 1990. Also in the series are records relating to many of the directors of the religious education program: Mary Valdovinos, Betty Paull, Joan Goodwin, Phyllis Ernest, Wanda Schaum, Andrea Dolcey, and Helen Johnson.
  9. Music, 1917-1993. Series contains miscellaneous documents related to the choir and other musical aspects of the church. Included are the words to “Our Church Song” (1932) and the music and words to several undated hymns.
  10. Organizations, 1886-1998. Series holds materials that document various inter-church groups. Included are papers of the Channing Club (a group of young adults, aged 21-41, who meet to discuss current events), Layman’s League, and Circle Supper Club. The by-laws and meeting minutes (1949-1983) of the Emerson Guild (a group of young women who greet new church members and aid the Religious Education program) are in this series as well. The majority of the series consists of materials relating to the Women’s Alliance, including annual reports (1962-1971), by-laws, two histories of the organization (1898 and 1967), meeting minutes (1897-1971), and newsletters (1948-1967).
  11. Affiliations, 1903-1993. Series  relates to local and national institutions with which the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee was involved. Included are papers from the Buddhist Center of Milwaukee, branches of the First Unitarian Society in Brookfield and Mequon, the national Unitarian-Universalist Association (UUA), and a Unitarian church in Transylvania.
  12. Conferences, 1960-1988. Series documents a selection of conferences and meetings in which the church took part. Included are two documents that relate to the national Unitarian-Universalist General Assembly and one relating to the Prairie Group.
  13. Publications, 1897-2004. Series contains copies of various newsletters put out by the church through the years. Several issues of The Parish Call (1897-1899) can be found in this series, along with the plainly titled Newsletter (1955-1961). The majority of this series consists of issues of the church’s most recent newsletter, The Chanticleer (1960-1965, 1982-2001).
  14. Audiovisual, 1867-2001. Series contains photographs, slides, and reel-to-reel audiotapes. In addition to many individual photographs of church events, activities, and meetings, this series has two photo albums of individual portraits from 1867 and 1870, respectively. The audiotapes are recordings of sermons and other talks that were broadcast over WFMR on Sunday mornings during the 1980s.

ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized into the above mentioned fourteen series, and arranged alphabetically and chronologically there under.

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee was founded in 1842, one year after Rev. Joseph Harrington of Chicago began an effort to spread the Unitarian faith to Milwaukee. William Cushing, the first minister of the church, presided over the construction of the first church building, located at the corner of Spring and Second Streets, in 1843. Within six years, though, the initial fervor of the Unitarians subsided and, unable to pay the mortgage of their new building, the group was forced to move out; the Society seemed to fade away and services became irregular and poorly attended. A revival of sorts occurred around 1856/1857, when a new church building was put up on Cass Street. Interest in the Society began to grow, and in 1859 the Society incorporated under Wisconsin laws. Attendance began to fall again in the early 1870s due to the lack of a steady minister, but that problem was solved with the installation of Rev. Gustavus Gordon in 1875. A period of affluence led to the construction of a third church building, located on the corner of Astor Street and Ogden Avenue, in 1892.

The First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee has remained in that building for the past 110 years, through numerous renovations and ministerial changes. Membership increased so much in the second half of the twentieth century that two branch churches were established, one in Brookfield and another in Mequon.
