SCOPE AND CONTENT: Information about LGBT Resource Center events and programs is included in brochures, event fliers, and news clippings. Information about the development of the Center is included in the "Proposal for an LGBT Center at UWM" and the Center Planning Committee file.
ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The UWM Task Force on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) Issues was created in 1993. The task force conducted Campus Climate surveys and held hearings to gather information on LGB issues on campus and determine what actions to take. Based on the recommendations of the task force's December 1994 report, UWM created the Advisory Committee on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) Student Concerns and a Liaison for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) Students. The first liaison was Thomas Dake, who was also the Director of Student Organization Advisory and Resources (SOAR). The results of the UWM Task Force on LGB Issues were used to support the creation of the LGBT Resource Center.
Following the recommendation of the Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee (SUFASC), the UWM Student Association approved the creation of a campus resource center that would address the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students in December 2000. The center held the grand opening of its location on the ground floor of the Student Union in September 2002.
The center strives to embrace the diversity of the UWM campus and provide a resource for those wanting to learn about or advocate for LGBT issues, as well as provide a safe space for all LGBT students and their allies at UWM.

ACQUISITION: The LGBT Resource Center transferred the collection to the Archives in March 2004 (accession 2003-72). Additional material was transferred by the Center in 2004 (2004-007).
PROCESSING: Michael Doylen processed the collection at the Archives in April 2004. Jessica Sawinski processed additional material in March 2007.
