UWM Student Union collection, 1956-[ongoing].

ABSTRACT: The collection largely consists of publications documenting events and activities which took place in the UWM Student Union. Included are handbooks, guides, and other brochures introducing the Union and its services, programming brochures and reports, and issues of the Union News (1964-1978). The collection also contains Union Policy Board minutes and related materials, and a Union user survey (1992). Also found in the collection are materials from the "55 and Over Program," which provided cultural, social, recreational, and educational services and activities for older adult members of the UWM Union.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection. (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39)

ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized alphabetically by name of office, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memos, and reports.

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The UWM Student Union was opened in 1956 and has been expanded and remodeled a number of times to accommodate an ever-growing student population. The UWM Student Union is a cultural, social, and recreational center for the UWM community, housing an Art Gallery, Bookstore, Cinema, Recreation Center, Craft Centre, food services and dining areas, as well as meeting rooms and offices, including the offices of student organizations. The Union Policy Board is responsible for formulating and setting policy for the overall operation of the Union.

ACQUISITION: Most of the publications appear to have been collected by Archives staff. Other materials were transferred to the Archives prior to 1989 by an unknown donor. Fran Ginter periodically transferred Sociocultural Programming materials to the Archives between 1991 and 1995.

PROCESSING: Christel T. Maass processed the collection at the Archives in August 1995. Jeremy Brett added several files from the office "dribble file" in February 2007.
