ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the
collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the
researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and
copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes
19.21-19.39).
ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized alphabetically, then chronologically. Files can
contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memos, and
reports.
ADMINISTRATIVE
HISTORY: In 1970, the
Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute was founded. Its purpose was to increase the
enrollment of Hispanic students at the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee, and
provide services related to education for Milwaukee's Hispanic community.
Initially, it was established within the Office of the Chancellor, and later
became part of the College of Letters & Science. The center offers English
classes, helps students receive financial aid, tutors incoming UWM freshmen, and
provides counseling and information services. It also supports Hispanic art
exhibits and theater productions, speakers, and community awareness activities.

1989.
