ABSTRACT: Records of the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM) Student Association and its predecessors, the Commonwealth and the University Student Government. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1950s to the 1980s, and largely consists of minutes, correspondence, bills, and reports of the student government and its various committees. The reports document student government activities and finances, policies and procedures, and recommendations and decisions. Also included are election and homecoming materials, a student guide and several other student government publications, as well as budget materials.


ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection. (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39)

ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized alphabetically, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, memos, and reports.

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The Commonwealth of the Wisconsin State Normal School was founded in 1924. In 1956, at the time UWM was formed, the organization's name was changed to the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee, University Student Government. In 1974 the organization changed its name to the University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee, Student Association.

ACQUISITION: An unknown donor transferred the collection to the Archives prior to 1989. Several issues of Student Action, most likely collected by Archives staff, were also added to the collection.
