ABSTRACT: Audio recordings of interviews with twelve former Milwaukee Public School administrators, teachers and seven former students, conducted as part of a University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM) History Department research project examining the decline of Milwaukee public schools. The interviews provide information on various perspectives of changes, dating from the 1920s through the 1980s, on the administration of the schools; modernization of the curriculum; the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association; student attitudes, discipline, and social life; parental involvement; race relations, especially for African American teachers; and public support for education. The collection also contains written abstracts of the interviews, but no verbatim transcriptions were written. Copies are available for most of interviews.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: Except for tapes 22-23, there are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

For some interviews, there exist both original and access copies. As a preservation measure, researchers must use the access copies, when they exist, rather than the originals.

Original copies of tapes 22-25, containing the interview with Edith Lepgold, are restricted, in accordance with the deed of gift. The same interview, with the restricted sections deleted, is available without restrictions on access copies numbered 22-23. Natalie Bondar, Doris Stout, and Dorothy Wallschlaeger did not sign release forms, so they remain holders of copyright.

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: In 1988, the Marshall & Ilsley Corporation provided a grant to UWM to prepare a history of the Milwaukee Public Schools since 1920. UWM assigned Frank Cassell (Chair of the History Department) and Sam Yarger (Dean of the School of Education) to administer the project. In May 1989, they appointed Michael Gordon of the History Department to coordinate an oral history component for the project. Between 1989-1990, Gordon and several graduate students conducted nineteen interviews. The Project's final report was published as Seeds of Crisis: Public Schooling in Milwaukee Since 1920 (Madison: University of Wisconsin, 1993).
