UWM Archival Collection 70

1.6 cubic ft. (2 archives boxes and 2 oversize folders)

ABSTRACT: The collection primarily documents the development of the Center's seminars, conferences, and lecture series, and the invitation of scholars, authors, and artists, such as Thomas J. Abercrombie, Celia Bertin, Anthony Burgess, and June Wayne. The collection consists of correspondence between the director and scholars, authors, and artists about lectures and conferences sponsored by the Center; brochures and announcements of Center events; photographs; committee meeting minutes; transcripts of lectures delivered at conferences; and the Center's Newsletter. Much of the collection documents the role and scholarship of women in the arts in the twentieth century. Working Papers, a series of works-in-progress published by the Center, documents the research and pre-publication of scholarship by the Center's fellows. Approximately one-quarter of the correspondence is in French, most dealing with "A Week with French Women" and other lectures and visits given by foreign artists and authors. Very little of the collection documents the creation and establishment of the Center.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection. (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

ARRANGEMENT: The files are organized alphabetically by personal name, name of office, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memoranda, photographs, reports, and brochures.

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The Center for Twentieth Century Studies supports multidisciplinary research in humanistic studies of contemporary culture. Since its establishment in 1968, the Center has developed a variety of interdisciplinary programs, including literary theory and criticism, contemporary arts and literature, film history and criticism, social theory, and cultural and technological studies. Public lectures, seminars, symposia, and national and international conferences further enhance current research trends in the Center. The Center reports directly to the Dean of the College of Letters & Science. In 2001 the Center changed its name, naturally enough, to the Center for 21st Century Studies.

Though appointments to the Center are made independently with no departmental affiliation, close cooperation with individual departments on appointments is maintained. The Center functions wholly with invited staff whose purpose is the pursuit of research in a company of scholars, so that through the sharing of thought and effort the established departments of the University may find their individual instructional and research programs reinforced. Interest in institutionalism is minimal, ideally non-existent, resulting in invitations to scholars in all fields of twentieth century studies not only from UWM but from universities world-wide. No member of the Center staff is granted permanent tenure in the Center, though no maximum limit is placed upon the number of consecutive annual appointments which a scholar may hold.

The Center draws its scholars from departments such as English and Comparative Literature, Art History, Fine Arts, and French and Italian. In recent years, the Center has made a particular effort to integrate its research with the interdisciplinary concentration in the Modern Studies in the Department of English and Comparative Literature's master's and doctoral programs.
