ABSTRACT: Records of the Medical Technology Program, the bulk of which consist of various meeting files and materials documenting the development of a master of science degree in medical technology. Many of the records were created or compiled by Edward A. Birge who served as chairman and director of the program. The earliest records document the development of the Medical Technology Program. The collection also documents course and curriculum developments, hospital affiliations and clinical training, enrollment, budget, staffing, space planning, and other matters of concern. The files regarding the establishment of a master of science degree in medical technology include proposals, a consultant's report, and correspondence.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The Medical Technology Program was approved by the UW Board of Regents in April 1962 and established within the College of Letters & Science. In 1971 the Program became part of the College's Department of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and in 1973 the Program was transferred to the College's Department of Health Sciences. In 1975 the School of Allied Health Professions was created and the Medical Technology Program, which continued to exist as part of the Department of Health Sciences, came under the administrative structure of the School.

Catherine W. Patrick (Director, 1978-1981)
Stephen Sonstein (Acting Director, 1981-1982)
Erika Sander (Acting Director, 1982-1983)
Frederick Pairent (Acting Director, 1983-1986)
Stephen M. Adams (Director, 1987)

In 1987 the program became the Clinical Laboratory Science Program with Stephen M. Adams as Director. The program used both the old name and the new name for a time.
