ABSTRACT: The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence files (1960-1976), documenting the establishment of the Dept. of Comparative Literature, course and curriculum developments, lectures, committee activities, and faculty appointments. The majority of the correspondence is between the department chairman and the Dean of the College of Letters & Science, the Associate Dean of Humanities, and the Chairman of the Dept. of English. The collection also contains departmental meeting minutes (1968-1992) documenting appointments, scheduling of classes, enrollment, budget, and miscellaneous announcements and administrative matters of concern. Other materials in the collection include degree proposals, minutes of the executive committee, and minutes of the Committee on Comparative Literature Program, which largely concern course developments and staffing.

ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY: The Dept. of Comparative Literature was established in 1963. In 1989 the department merged with the Dept. of English to become the Dept. of English and Comparative Literature.
